Binge Eating Consequences Will Seriously Affect Your Health

Added: 12/14/2005

Binge eating is a newly recognized condition that probably affects millions of people all over the world. Some people may think that a binge eating problem occurs when you eat too much and that such difficulties are not that complicated. But in fact there are serious binge eating consequences. Constant overeating can lead to obesity and other related weight problems.

For some individuals, eating is like a drug. And the binge eating consequences of this addiction will result in being over weight. Being obese is almost as much a mental problem as it is a physical problem. People with binge eating problems regularly eat huge amount of food while feeling out of control during these episodes. Binge eating can result in both emotional and physical consequences as it leads to serious health problems. Binge eating consequences include weight gain, emotional distress and unhealthy dieting.

Gaining weight is a natural consequence of regular overeating. Most people suffering from binge eating are overweight and they become obese with time. Extra kilograms may make people more prone to health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, joint problems and breathlessness. A person with binge eating difficulties is at risk for a kidney disease, heart attack, arthritis, bone deterioration, stroke and certain types of cancer.

It means that the major complications of binge eating disorders are the diseases that accompany obesity. If a person is overweight in his childhood he is more likely to have extra kilos as an adult. Concerns about weight gain may result in constant dieting. Extreme diets and yo-yo dieting (regular losing and regaining weight) have their own health risks, especially for young people.

Binge eating consequences can be found in the sphere of feelings and emotions. Regular binging can lead to low self-evaluation, self-esteem, low energy and depression. Helplessness, worthlessness and hopelessness can occur when a person feels he/she can't control his/her overeating. Most people have tried to control it on their own but they have not succeeded for a long time. Some people miss school, work or social activities to overeating. All negative emotions make worse binge eating episodes and spread into other areas of a person's life.

Many people with binge eating were not taught to cope with bad emotions. They have no abilities and skills to express or tolerate them. In these cases eating is used as an instrument for dealing or avoiding negative emotions. Most people with binge eating problems feel bad about themselves; they are fully occupied with their appearance. It is reported that the sufferers often have a distorted body image; they have wrong ideas of how important appearance and weight are in our lives. Most feel ashamed and try to hide their difficulties. It happens that the closest and dearest family members or friends know nothing about a person's problem.

So we see that binge eating consequences may occur not only in the area of health but in the emotional sphere as well. Health problems combined with emotional difficulties can result in very complicated cases. Binge eaters find it hard to control their weight and they are more likely to regain weight quickly. For these reasons people with the disorder may require treatment that focuses on their binge eating habits before they try to lose weight.

Doctors use different techniques both psychological and medical to monitor and change the sufferers` eating habits. Researchers are still trying to determine what method or combination of methods are the most effective to fight off binge eating and binge eating consequences.
