Added: 12/26/2005

Anime - also called "Japanimation" is the latest export from Japan in the world of cinema. Movie-goers talk about anime like it's the next big thing, but in fact it's been a mainstay of Japanese cinema for decades! For years anime has tackled lightweight subjects like fighting robots, pre-pubescent high school girls or hybrid samurai-animal warriors. But in the last 10 years anime has made huge strides in its subject matter and is finally getting the attention and respect it deserves.

Walt Disney Productions officially stopped making theatrical animated features after the poor box office performance of its last 5 animated films. Disney decided to ride the new wave of computer animated films. During the same time that Disney was floundering, Anime or animation produced in Japan was hitting new heights. Long a mainstay of Japanese television and a product that has made mega-millions for its producers, anime is finally getting a little respect as the art form distances itself from themes of ninja assassins and scantily-clad teenagers. In short anime is growing up. And audiences worldwide are the lucky benefactors.

Miyazaki also drew manga, the Japanese comics that are very popular in Japan and many anime films are shot according to the plots of the mangas. Manga is similar to the American comic and they have become a whole culture for the children and even the adults who are fond of these stories that help them believe there is magic in the world.

Robert Baldwin is another name closely linked with anime. Not so much for any accomplishments he may have had in Japan, but because Robert Baldwin was smart enough to get his films produced with Japanese artists.

It's no secret that the cost of producing a cartoon in Japan or Singapore is a lot less than producing the same cartoon in America. Baldwin took his studio on the road. Producing his television properties overseas for a fraction of the costs of stateside production.
