About Dental Bonding. It May be the Solution for Discolored, Cracked or Uneven Teeth

Added: 01/26/2006

Dental bonding is one of my favorite subjects. I was just talking to my wife about the other day in the shower (I was in the shower, she wasn't). Talking about dental bonding we can define it as a procedure of placing some special material (usually a durable plastic material) in the back teeth or front teeth as well. The material is hardened with a special light of high intensity and then the surface of a tooth is polished. Dental bonding usage includes restoring decayed or cracked teeth, making some cosmetic improvements or changing the color of teeth.

The first thing to say about dental bonding is that bonding is considered to be one of the easiest and cheapest of cosmetic dental procedures. Everyone knows about crowns and veneers, these traditional and customized tooth coverings which must be manufactured in a laboratory. Bonding materials are much easier to produce. Bonding usually takes only one dental visit unless several teeth require bonding. While bonding just a little amount of tooth enamel needs removing.

Another thing about dental bonding is the fact that bonding is not as painful as traditional means. Many of us have gone through painful procedures connected with them. Many of us could say at least once in his life: "I hate dentists!" For the procedure of dental bonding anesthesia is commonly not required (except for the cases when a cavity is filled).

Those were advantages of bonding. Now a few words about dental bonding disadvantages. To begin with the stain resistance of materials is used in bonding. Comparing with crowns they resist stains no so good. Another disadvantage consists in the fact that bonding materials are liable to chipping and may break off the tooth. They serve not so long and are not so strong as crowns, veneers or fillings.

The disadvantages above lay some limitations on the dental bonding usage. Therefore, some dentists regard dental bonding as proper to small cosmetic changes, correction of some esthetics defects, correction of very low bite pressure, etc. In general dental bonding is useful for filling gaps, reshaping or changing a color of teeth (though it won't be of great help for smokers because after bonding their teeth will soon become yellow again).

Besides advantages and disadvantages some more useful information about dental bonding can be given. I think it would be essential to tell whether bonded teeth require some special care. No special care is required. Follow hygiene practices, brush your teeth twice a day, and regularly visit your dentist for professional check-ups and cleanings. The only thing to be taken into consideration is to be careful when biting hard objects. You'd better give up such bad habits as biting fingernails, pens or pencils, etc. bonding
material is rather fragile. The lifespan of bonding materials is usually from 3 to about 10 years. For comparison, the traditional silver fillings last about 5-6 years. It depends on your oral habits and, of course, on how much bonding was done.

Dental bonding is a very practical, fast and almost painless way to improve your smile, repair decayed teeth, make your teeth look naturally white and healthy, fill in gaps and cracks. It's one of the best means of cosmetic dentistry. So, if you want some cosmetic correction of your teeth it is exactly what you need. Anyway, the best advice which can be given is your dentist's advice.

If you need more dental bonding information about dental bonding, then you should visit your dentist. Your stomatologist will be able to consult you about the kinds of dental bondings available and about the necessity for you to have a dental bonding in your mouth.
