It is generally admitted that in modern world antivirus software is essential protection from unauthorized access, viruses, Trojan horses, spyware. But the multiplicity of antivirus software on the market makes it difficult for a simple user to choose a reliable product that will satisfy all his needs, will be simple and will not require much system resources.
The problem of computer virus protection appeared immediately after first viruses were created and infected personal computers. One more interesting fact: in the variety of modern operating systems, most viruses and unsolicited programs are written for Windows-based computers. There are not much viruses created for Unix, Mac OS systems, and the reasons are simple as black and white: Linux and Mac are not so widely used as Windows, though one can't say that Windows is the most reliable of them.
The number of newly-issued viruses is from 50 to more than one hundred appear every month. Most of them are regarded as innocent and are made just for fun, but some of the viruses appear to be very dangerous and are sometimes disregarded by low-quality computer virus protection software, commonly known as antivirus software. You will decide for yourself if the program is convenient and effective enough. There also exist many websites that rate and criticize antivirus programs, forums, where customers share their opinions about one product or another.
According to most sites which have top AV reviews, the ten best antivirus programs are: McAfee VirusScan 2006, Platinum Internet Security 2005, PC-cillin Internet Security 2005, Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal (also known as AVP), F-Secure, Norton AntiVirus, Doctor Web AntiVirus, Norman Virus Control (NVC), Avast!, AVG Free Edition.
Of course all these reviews are rather relative. Some people consider that none of the antivirus can be called the best and this is also true, because different computer virus protection programs have different functions and priorities. So a customer who is in search of an antivirus program will have to make his own conclusions based on the information provided on the internet and also recommendations by friends or relatives. One can also use free antivirus software which is also available in the Internet, though free-downloaded antivirus software is often too complicated and not reliable enough to keep your PC from outer threats.
This year most reviews gave their preference to McAfee VirusScan 2006. Specialists claim that McAfee includes a more reliable spyware scanner than other AV programs, being able to reveal adware and spyware before it is downloaded to your machine. However, there is an impressive drawback in that program (as in many other professional AV programs): when the system scanner is working it slows down the computer and your applications start working two times slower than usual. Taking into account that fact, it is strongly recommended to run the system scanner when your computer is idle.
As far as the well-known Kaspersky antivirus is concerned, the consumers say it reveals viruses, malware, Trojans and so on better than others do.
