In 1996, TracFone Wireless (formerly Topp Telecom) rolled out the Uniden 4600 prepaid wireless phone. It was the first introduction of prepaid wireless services in the United States. This event was the beginning of the cell phone and the prepaid wireless industry has evolved into a major force in the telecommunications industry. According to the Yankee Group, the prepaid wireless is considered to be the fastest growing segment in the wireless industry today.
Concentrating on legitimizing the category to all the consumers, seeking a convenient and affordable wireless solution, TracFone Wireless satisfies not only the fiscally challenged customers, but also senior citizens, casual cell phone users, safety users, parents, the youth market and gift givers to name a few.
One of the advantages of TracFone Wireless is that it offers the nation's largest digital coverage area in the prepaid industry and is able to provide a local phone number in every county in the United States. The company established reseller agreements with the nation's leading network carriers, and thus, created a "virtual network."
In July, 2001, TracFone Wireless released the industry's first truly nationwide digital prepaid wireless phone, the digital TracFone Nokia 5165. It is the TDMA based phone, which makes the digital wireless ownership available to everyone. The phone comes with consumer rich digital wireless features, such as free voice mail, call waiting, and caller ID.
TracFone was the first to develop the technology to track its customer's cell phone usage directly on the handset's LCD. This patented debit technology displays the customer's exact airtime balance and audibly alerts them when they are low on minutes.
TracFone offers a variety of plans, including "Pay As You Go Nationwide". The Pay As You Go Nationwide is basically a pre-paid phone card with the amount of units (minutes), programmed into the customer's phone after he activates the phone card. The users of the Pay As You Go Nationwide Plan can obtain extra air time cards as they run out of current air time almost anywhere: in Target, Wal-Mart or on the Tracfone's web site. The Pay As You Go Nationwide plan is the best solution for any customer.
Actually, the company offers six different types of the TracFone prepaid airtime cards.
There are two cards that offer a one year of wireless service. The first card comes with hundred and fifty airtime units (cost: $94.99), and the other one comes with three hundred units, but it also offers Double Minutes on future cards that you purchase (cost: $149.99).
The other four cards are simply air time cards.
400 airtime units - Cost $79.99
200 airtime units - Cost $49.99
100 airtime units - Cost $29.99
40 airtime units - Cost $19.99
Those customers, who choose the four service cards mentioned above (instead of one of the one-year service cards), need to purchase and activate one of these other cards every sixty days. Otherwise, they can lose their service and have to go through the whole process to re-activate their phone or to assign a new phone number.
