The aircraft design analysis of 707 and 727 Boeing models

The main purpose for this article to be written is to describe the main technical features of 707 and 727 families of Boeing aircrafts. Despite the fact the airplanes of these models are not produced at the moment, they still continue to be exploited by some airline companies. These two families presented the first models of Boeing company, on the basis of which the following models of company's aircrafts were developed afterwards.

Boeing 707 is considered to be one of the first world-famous jet airplanes. Its history began in 1950 year, when aerospace design engineers of Boeing company on the basis of ?-47 bomber developed a new aircraft design project - the 473-60? model. Later, in 1952 the company presented the transformed project of this aircraft - 367-80 model. As the civil and military customers refused to support that project, the company took a decision to build the airplane on its own funds. The first flight of 367-80 aircraft took place on the 15-th of May in 1954 year. In July 1955 Boeing firm was given permission to build 707 and ?-135 transport planes for BBC. Comparing with the aircraft design of 367-80 model, 707 plane's fuselage was 3 meter longer and more powerful jets were set. In the middle of 1955 year Pan American World Airways incorporation ordered 20 first airplanes of 707-120 model. The first flight the aircraft performed on the 20-th of December in 1957 and the regular flights started in August in 1959.

The aircrafts could fly over 4500 kilometers and the volume of fuel tank was 58500 liters. To fly to Europe the new JT3D-3B model was developed, the aircraft design of which contained more economical engine and increased fuel tank. As a result, the new airplane managed to fly the distance over 6700 kilometers and the features of its design were taken into account for creating new modifications in the future. Rolls-Royce English engines were mounted in 707-320 and 707-420 models which were used for flying at far distances. 720 and 720B were different from other models because of their small sizes and could transport about 130-156 passengers at the distance of 5700 kilometers. The air-freighters were also produced. In general, the aircrafts of 707 family were serially produced from 1957 to 1978 and 60% of them were bought by the airline companies of the Near East and Africa.

At the end of November in 1960, Boeing company started producing the aircrafts of 727 family. Eastern Airlines and American Airlines ordered about 80 airplanes of that family and all trials of 727-100 model were finished successfully and at the beginning of February in 1963 the first commercial flight took place. The first serial planes were supplied with J?8D-1 engine (5990 kilogram-force), but it was replaced by more powerful one later.

As to 727-100F and 727-100QF freighters, the features of their aircraft design included the side door (2,18?3,4m) and allowed to carry over 20,4 tones of cargo.

For the reason of further improving the aircrafts of 727 family, in 1972 Boeing company presented the new modification of 727-200  model - "Advanced". By its sizes 727-200 "Advanced" was completely identical to 727-200 but had improved equipment. The main differences from the previous modification were: strengthened planer's construction (that allowed to increase take-off mass), usage of more powerful engines (JT8D-17R ) with noise decreasing systems, additional fuel tank, automatic braking system, danger warning system.

In 1981 the new 727-200F "Advanced" freight carrier was developed for Federal Express company which could transport over 28,6 tons. It was higher(10,36m) and had an increased volume of the cabin (193,2m3). In general about 15 planers were built. The 15-th 727-200F Advanced" was the last aircraft of 727 family.
