The Pocket PC has become more popular recently. The reason for its growth is the increasing of the technical parameters level. Below you can find important characteristics for the mobile hardware.
A Processor is the most important module for a pocket PC. This is the part, on which the performance of the pocket PC depends, and its ability to solve the required problems. The processor for a pocket PC cannot be replaced, that is why you should pay attention to its clock rate, due to the tasks you will set.
The Pocket PC models of the primary level use processors with a clock rate 200 - 300 MHz. This is just enough for functions of an organizer, e-mail and Internet access. The Pocket PCs with such parameters will be able to process some uncomplicated games, handle photo images and MP3 music. If you need a pocket PC for viewing videos, this variant is far not the best. The video files should be optimized for the pocket PC of such level, and this may lead to a significant quality loose. You should look for a pocket PC with a clock rate not lower than 400 MHz to enjoy watching movies.
Currently, the limit of the pocket PC performance is at the level of 624 MHz. It allows solving such tasks as the cryptographic protection of information in the computer memory. Certainly, the clock rate for the pocket PC is one of the main criteria of your choice. At the same time, the pocket PC software, that you intend to use, defines the clock rate you need.
The modern models of the pocket PCs are provided with colored TFT displays. Monochrome or STN displays are still in use for the pocket PCs, however, this trend will be history soon. The production of these models is almost stopped. A typical pocket PC has a display with the resolution 240x320 or 480x640 pixels for the operation system Windows Mobile and 160x160, 320õ320 and 320x480 pixels for the pocket PC on Palm OS. These resolutions are very small comparing to the traditional parameters of the clipboard and desktop computers; nevertheless, they are sufficient for comfortable work.
A high resolution for 480x640 pixels in VGA mode has appeared for the Windows Mobile operation system recently. Actually, this is a positive event for the pocket PC development and, at the same time, there are some negative sides. The linear size of the displays was not increased, therefore, new displays are not able to show more information than it was before. A higher resolution increased the stream of the graphical data and it is a reason for the increased power supply. Special utilities for pocket PC like SE_VGA or OzVGA, which can emulate true VGA mode to place more information at display, may solve this disadvantage. Certainly, a higher resolution is the best way to show images and pictures with a higher quality.
These initial pieces of advice will be helpful for people, who are thinking about the purchase of a pocket PC.
