Obtaining alternate domain names

Internet domain names should be easy to speak and keep in mind. Good names of sites are kept at peoples' mind in a better way. Good domain names are easier to remember than e-mail, fax or phone numbers. That is the reason why people, involved in the web business, should think well about domain names they are going to obtain for their web projects. There are some simple rules for this activity.

The domain name is a word sequence that is entered by the users to the browsers' address line. Basic and alternate domain names are practical to visit your site, however; it is not the actual name of your site. The domain names have a connection with the DNS servers that are used to transform the digital addresses (IP addresses) to the symbolic names. Each site you visit in the Internet has a digital IP address and a symbolic domain name at once.

Usually, the domain names are classified due to their extensions that are identifying codes for the domain names. There are three most popular domains of the higher level that do not correspond to any country:

.COM - is the abbreviation for "commercial". The domain names with this postfix are very popular and each company or physical person can obtain it.

.NET - is the abbreviation for "network". Initially, this postfix was created for technical web sites. However, anyone can register a web site's name with such extension.

.ORG - is the abbreviation for "organization". Primarily, this extension was in use for non profit organizations or for other companies that do not use .com or .net extensions. Nowadays, a person or a company can register a domain name with the .org extension.

Alternate domain names can be assigned with the usage of extension for certain countries of the world. Each country has its own domain extension. For instance, Canada uses .ca, Japan - .jp, and Russia - .ru extensions. Most of the countries in the world have some special rules, prescribing the abilities and purposes for the registration of alternative and basic domain names. That is the reason why you should investigate these statements before the registration of new domain names.

The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is responsible for the administrating high level domains all over the world. There are some alternate domain names that are not assigned to any country. The most popular alternate domain names are: .areo, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, .pro. The purpose of any of these alternative domain names is to be functional for certain purposes. The alternate domain names are provided with some limitations. The ICANN official web site contains more detailed information concerning this subject.

Searching for the domain names for your site in the Internet, you can find some proposals to use the extensions like .xxx, .free and .mp3. They are not actual extensions and they are not approved by the ICANN. The access to the sites with the names like those is acceptable by the specific software used. These extensions can be useful only for the background purpose, since the ICANN has not approved them yet.

Although, .com, .net and .org are very popular extensions, they are not the only available ones. Functionality of the countries' domains and alternate domain names is the same as for the high level domains. That is the reason why you should not use a satisfactory domain of the higher level, when you can find a better alternative with the other extensions. Remember that the domain name is a little quote of your business success. Therefore, it is difficult to get lucky without these conditions.
