The majority of digital cameras' users are used to a generally acknowledged thought that mirror digital cameras were produced, either, for the professionals or for those amateurs, who had plenty of money to waste. The first reason for such state of things is that devices of the top class usually need a special training and knowledge to use them properly; the second one is that the high-end cameras have always been much more expensive in comparison with the ordinary digital devices.
Nowadays, with the appearance of the junior model in Nikon D line, it seems that the situation is going to change. No doubt that the professionals would prefer to use the Nikon D70, since it is the best existing camera of the top class, however, the amateurs would be glad to know that the manufacturers think of them too. The Nikon D50 is especially for them. This mirror camera was designed for those, who are going to deal with a product of the upper level for the fist time. It is much simpler to use it than the famous D70; nevertheless, the quality of the pictures, made with the D50, is very high.
The body of the Nikon D50 looks almost the same as the D70 model; however, it is a little smaller and weighs less. The most significant changes took place, mainly, in the inner stuffing. The LCD-display became bigger and now, it is 2.0 inches wide; the device supports the SD-cards instead of CF, USB 2.0 protocol support is available and auto focusing is improved in the new Nikon D50. The matrix, used in the D50, differs from that of the D70. In spite of all the rumors, the quality of the pictures remains almost the same with the only slight difference in the color gamut; the noise level is not different and does not practically influence the quality of the pictures. Speaking about the lacking features in the D50, the following of them are notable: the LCD-display in the D50 is not illuminated, which makes the camera uncomfortable to use in the darkness and it is impossible to use the lithium battery CR-2 type in this model. In addition, the NEF-files can be recorded only in the uncompressed format, which is not very comfortable. Meanwhile, most of the amateurs will not notice all these changes, however, they made possible to lower the total value of the device.
Nonetheless, the Nikon D50 differs from theD70 in many ways, the experts are sure that all the major advantages of the latter remain: the high quality of the pictures, wonderful operating possibilities, the speed and accuracy of the auto focusing, the extreme efficiency and minimal time needed to make a first shoot. The most exciting fact about the D50 model is its price - Nikon offers its customers the digital mirror camera with a professional look quality of the pictures for the price lower than 1000$. The company did its best to develop the device with an optimal combination of the available functions and price, which will be affordable for a vast class of the amateurs of the digital photography.
