Nextel equipment and services provided by Nextel's emergency response team

Added: 11/08/2005

A Fleet Net company was founded by Morgan O'Brien in 1987. In 1993, it was renamed Nextel. In April, 2000, the company began offering its always-on data and Internet connections; as a result, about fourteen percent of its seven million customers have signed up for the wireless data services. Its top data speeds were in the range of 19.2 kbps, slightly faster than the 14.4 kbps.

Nextel Communications, the U.S. wireless phone, is a company that incorporates two-way radio features with its services. For most people, Nextel is known primarily for its cell phones that also work like walkie-talkies. The company offers Direct Connect - a digital service that allows customers to reach other Nextel customers directly, without placing a phone call.

However, Nextel also provides Public Safety Services. Nextel's Emergency Response Team grants Rapid Deployment Services, such as Nextel equipment, services and support in emergency situations:

·     Disaster Support. In both urban and rural environments, Nextel equipment and services are available during declared emergencies.

·    Agency Specific Event Support. The company provides single agencies with Nextel equipment and services to support limited-duration events.

·    Mobile Cellular Sites, Portable Microwave Facilities and Ruggedized Handsets. The company presents a secure and stable communications platform that is interoperable with other private radio networks.

A wide range of Nextel equipment includes several phone models, specifically designed to meet the needs of challenging work environments: from the durable i530 and rain resistant i305 to the GPS-enabled i58sr.

The company offers i325 IS for the most physically demanding environments. This model meets a military standard 810 C/D/E for resistance to vibration, mechanical shock, rain and dust, and it is equipped with a red Nextel Emergency Group Walkie-Talkie button, an exclusive service for the public safety agencies. Among other features, this phone has a fixed antenna, rubber-molded grips and a speakerphone.

Founded in 1987, the company changed its name to Nextel in 1993. In 1995, more than one million dollars was invested by McCaw for Nextel communications stake ownership. Daniel Akerson was positioned as the chairman and CEO of Nextel until his departure in 2000, a founder O'Brien was the vice chairman of the company. Nextel needed to establish a nationwide network and grow into a viable national competitor. In 1999, the company was going to buy over hundred and ninety wireless licenses from bankrupt telecom company Geotek; nevertheless, it was blocked from closing the deal by the Justice Department.

In 2000, the government allowed Nextel to buy the Geotek licenses. At the same time, the company offered to buy hundreds of licenses, owned by another bankrupt telecom startup, Nextwave, for eight point three billion dollars. In order to build a dominant position in the wireless industry, Nextel concentrated on adding subscribers, using its two-way radio feature.

Today, Nextel is one of the top leaders in the wireless world and is ranked the sixth among the major carriers in total subscribers (before being bought by Sprint PCS, the company had about fifteen million subscribers). In 2004, the company reported a second quarter profit of one point three billion, its ninth consecutive profitable quarter, and four times better than the previous year.
