Very soon the internet surfers will be able to visit the web sites with unusual names or, rather, the endings of the URL addresses. According to some proven sources in the Internet, the ICANN organization has approved recently a couple of new suffixes for domain name
Let us remember that the DNS is a special system for the web addressing, due to which, users can find and access certain web sites in the Internet. Every web site has a URL address, containing two obligatory elements: "www" at the beginning, which stands for the World Wide Web, and a special suffix like ".com" or ".net" at the tail of the name. It is called the first level domain system. The DNS is managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which actually registers the domain names of the first level.
At the moment, there are several specific endings in the first level of the DNS, which show the geographical positioning of the site or its belonging to a specific field. Among the suffixes, widely used nowadays in the Internet, are the followings:
.com - commercial organisations
.gov - governmental institutions and state authorities
.net - common net resources
.edu - educational institutions
.mil - military institutions
.org - non profit organisations
According to the information, now this list includes two more suffixes: .xxx and .mobi.
The first one is to be in use for the sites with a specific adult content. At the moment, the web sites, offering content for people above 18 years old, mostly have .com suffix. The new "xxx" ending will help to define the sites with the adult content directly on its address level. It might help to solve the problem of prohibiting the access to such sites for children; it will be easy for the web filters to configure and not to allow visiting the xxx sites.
Another new suffix, announced by the ICANN, is "mobi". This suffix will be used for sites, specially designed for mobile phones. The first sites with mobi endings will appear in 2006. It is necessary to adopt the sites for small dimensions of displays in the mobile phones. Actually, the web surfing is available for the users of the mobile phones with WAP support but it is far from the internet surfing with the help of a personal computer. The users of the pocket commuters and communicators, based on the PDA, can experience a more or less comfortable surfing.
Lately, the leading manufacturers of the mobile phones, as well as the cell operators, are facing the necessity to create specific sites for the mobile phones. Thus, they initiated the registering of the separate suffix "mobi" for such sites. Samsung Electronics, Microsoft Corporation, Nokia Corporation, Ericsson and some other world known companies are among the followers of the idea of a new domain name. People believe that it might increase the use of the web surfing on the mobile phone and, thus, give a new push to the total development of the mobile technologies.
The certain thing about all these is that new innovations will, certainly, lead to the broadening of the mobile phones' functionality.
