A uniprocessor workstation server system with the support of main server characteristics has many advantages. These servers are optimal when the budget is restricted. Workstation server systems have a high level of reliability, workability and scalability.
Actually, it is not a good practice to use desktop computers as network servers, since they do not meet even minimal requirements of reliability and fault-tolerance, and it is hard to administrate them. In most cases their performance is not sufficient for solving the server tasks. That is the reason why it would be a better solution to use simple server systems instead of powerful desktop computers for these purposes.
Enterprises that require an efficient and cheap server system of the basic level could use the uniprocessor Server New Line SP 2800. This server is not expensive, however, it is reliable and it has a high performance. This workstation server is good for serving small workgroups with a number of computers not higher than twelve. Usually, people use it as a small databases server, file-server, print-server and it also carries the firewall, proxy-server and mail server functions.
In standard configuration they mount the Server New Line SP 2800 in the case "mini-file-server" Chieftec that has a high quality power unit, the Chieftec ATX-1136H ATX, with a power of360 Wt. This ATX server case meets the requirements of the ATX 2.03 standard. The sizes of the case are 535 x 205 x 540 mm and the material is steel of 1.0 mm SECC. In addition, it gives an opportunity for installing double processor cards. The workstation server has four external modules for 5.25 inches devices, two external modules for 3.5 inches devices, six internal modules for hard disks and it gives a possibility to install up to three coolers.
The NewLine SP 2800 is mounted on a specialized server motherboard of the initial level with the PCI-Express technology support and Intel Pentium 4 support in 775 contact case with 800 MHz clock rate and Intel Hyper Treading technology. There is an opportunity for using the next generation of the 64 bit processors Intel with the EM64T technology support. The used chipset is Intel E7221, clock rate of the system bus is 800 MHz. There are extension slots - two 64 bit PCI-X with 66 MHz rate, one 32 bit PCI 2.3 slot with 33 MHz rate and one PCI Express 8x slot with a capacity up to 4 GB per second on both sides.
The motherboard of the workstation server supports one IDE UDMA100 channel that could carry up to two devices and four Serial ATA channels with NCQ supports. The controller supports the RAID 0.1 and 1+0 functions. Using the Serial ATA that is integrated to the Intel 82801FR 1CH6R card allows to create a high speed and fault-tolerant disk arrays from the four SATA disks. The BIOS of the built-in RAID controller has a LSI Logic license and does not have any analogues at desktop motherboards. In a standard configuration the server has CD-ROM IDE 52x, although there is an opportunity to install DVD, CD-RW or DVD/CD-RW combo. The Video card is the GMCH integrated graphics controller 8 MB. This figure seems very small for PC users; nevertheless, it is a sufficient characteristic for the server that should solve its tasks instead of working with images.
