Control for the unlimited bandwidth

ISDN and many other technologies are very popular nowadays, since they can provide very efficient and fast work of the channel. However, there could be some troubles when the access is performed from the corporative network. There are some ways to decrease spending on the corporative Internet access with the help of systems and protocols like MLPPP and some others.

Unlimited bandwidth is one of the most popular purposes for domain hosting providers. ISDN connections are very interesting ways to reach this aim. Many providers proclaim the unlimited bandwidth, however, some of them are not actually able to provide the service at this level. That is the reason why the interest to the BOD mechanisms is permanently growing up.

You need to know some specific features if you like to control the logical B-channels of the Basic Rate Interface (BRI) ISDN. This knowledge will help you to adjust the BOD parameters, saving money and precious resources of the central modem pool of the corporative network. The BOD mechanism helps save the resources when the users connect from the standalone computer or from the local network. The ability to control the second channel usage allows to optimize the unlimited bandwidth and provides the necessary data sending speed.

The MLPPP protocol was developed due to the necessity of the network industry to combine some connection channels into the common one with a high capacity. This method can be used not only for the ISDN but for many other channel types and for common analogue lines. Due to the specification, the MLPPP can be applied to combine some varied communication channels. For instance, you can combine a synchronous channel T1 and an asynchronous phone line. Nevertheless, if you try to perform such exotic activity, then you have too much free time.

In the process of the MLPPP configuration you should make settings for the threshold values. The router needs these setting to determine when it needs to switch the channel on and off. The inactivity parameter sets the condition for a single channel breaking. Usually, this value equals five minutes. It means that the router will close the channel if the traffic is absent for five minutes. When the outgoing traffic appears at the Ethernet interface, then the router will establish the connection again. Setting the connection, identification and channel configuring take only a few seconds, thus, the users will not notice any stops in the work of the channel. There are some periods of reconnection of the channel, though the whole process seems to be uninterrupted.

The ability of adding a second B-channel, when the threshold is overridden for the first one, is another important function of the MLPPP mechanism. You can adjust the MLPPP to switch on the second channel when the main channel loading is higher than 32 Kb/sec during some period of time.

You can evaluate the level of the Internet access spend decreasing with the help of the BOD router by the following example. Let us suppose that your provider gives you hundred hours per month by the fixed tariff. When you override this quote, then you move to a higher tariff. If you use both B-channels and keep the Internet connection for eight hours per day, then the privileged hours will end in one week and you will have to pay by the high tariff. In this case you can adjust the BOD mechanisms to provide the Internet access when it is needed and switch it off when there is no traffic. In this way, you can significantly decrease your spending and use the unlimited bandwidth.
