The Asus Company, Taiwan leading computer manufacturer, has already got several well-proved Pocket PC models and mobile phones in its product range. At the time being, Asus is not going to reduce their development and lag behind other manufacturers; therefore, the company constantly works to improve its products in the best way possible. One of the latest models is Pocket PC Asus P505. Some PC market experts declare that this model is more than successful and is quite capable of competing with the world most popular Pocket computer Sony Ericsson P910i.
Asus P505 is designed to meet all users' demands. It demonstrates high processing efficiency and can carry out all the tasks required of handheld computers. Its phone ergonomics allows dialing numbers and answering calls with just one hand, and digital keyboard is of great help. Another convenient solution of Asus, implemented in P505, is the size and position of a communicator antenna. It is noticeably smaller than those in other Pocket PCs with integrated phone features.
It is well known that communicators based on Pocket PC platform usually have difficulties with phone interface implementation. Asus developers tried to solve this problem by changing the software. Asus P505 uses Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition as the basic PC operating system and phone software designed by Asus. As a result, P505 has two interfaces - the one of the phone and the other of the Pocket PC. True to say, sometimes working with this model is not very convenient, because in order to reach certain settings, users must change the interface, but mostly the optimal level of phone and PC features combination has been reached.
It is worth mentioning that Asus P505 has no QWERTY keyboard. The placement of the joystick is very unusual: it is on the left side of the computer body. Such position allows user operating the joystick with the left hand thumb.
The communicator is equipped with Intel XScale PXA270 processor with clock speed up to 416MHz. The device has an economic mode to lower the energy usage at the expense of processor speed reducing; in this state Asus P505 can only receive incoming phone calls. The volumes of operating and disk memory are the same - 64 MB.
Wireless communication is represented with Bluetooth support and infrared port. The USB port serves to connect this handheld to a personal computer. The same USB connection can be used to recharge the battery. The absence of Wi-Fi and mini USB port is a weak point of this device.
Asus P505 can operate in phone mode when the cover is closed; it is possible to make and receive calls, read incoming messages, check the history of calls and work with the calendar or address book. The device switches to Pocket PC mode when the cover is opened.
Asus P505 Pocket PC is the first model with the improved phone interface. As a result, the use of phone features in this device has become more comfortable and user-friendly, while pocket PC functions are on the traditionally high level, typical of its world known manufacturer.
