Are cell phone cameras losing their snap?

Being now an essential tool of everyday activity, cell phones with embedded cameras have become so popular with average consumers that it is hard to imagine how our life was different only a few years ago. About one-sixth of all new cell phone sales are camera phones, and by the end of this year it will grow to a third. However, the quality problem of this runaway hit may turn it to a small-time niche service if the major problems remain unaddressed.

Today cell phones are used as the main source of communication, and this is all due to constantly broadening functional facilities cell phones are now able to grant consumers. Cell phone cameras have become extremely popular, for they allow to realize a visual communication.

A camera phone was invented on June 11, 1997, by Philippe Kahn, when his daughter Sophie was born. Kahn integrated a miniature camera into a Motorola cell phone, and as his wife Sonia Lee Kahn was in labor, broadcast pictures of the newborn baby around the world. The camera phone became a founding vision for LightSurf Technologies, now owned by Verisign. In Japan, the first camera phones were developed for working professionals, who wanted to keep an image of their children with them wherever they went and as they worked. A user interface was designed to be simple so that novices and children could also use the feature.

Contemporary cell phone cameras are being constantly improved both in design and functional operations, but still "Today, camera phones are imaging-capable, but photographically disabled",- Dan Carp, the Kodak Chief Executive, says. Carp's remarks reveal flaws of the cell phone industry's biggest success story of the last years.

Camera phones are credited with the surging use of wireless data services in the Unated States with some wireless operations saying their data revenues have doubled in the past two years. "Mobile imaging may be the biggest breakthrough since the Brownie camera",-Carp said. The Kodak market study found that most owners of cell phone cameras find their devices less than satisfying, though they used the cameras to snap about seventy billion photos last year. Nearly two-third of camera phone owners rarely, if ever, upload pictures to a computer, and seventy percent never (or rarely) send photos to other phones.

A short camera battery life, photo quality and complexity of printing pictures are causing major headaches for the great number of owners of cell phone cameras. "These are all warning signs",-Carp says. The industry is not ignoring the problems. Many wireless manufacturers and operators are trying to make attempts to solve the problems. Snapshots, made with cell phone cameras, are going to get much sharper.

While it took the photographic industry several years before it produced the first seven megapixel compact digital camera, the mobile phone industry is wasting no such time. Embedding cameras into cell phones has helped U.S. consumers realize that their phones can also access the Internet, whether to post camera phone photos on a public Web site, watch a specially formatted TV show, send a photo to a friend's handset or use any number of offline printing services. As a result, wireless operators are much more interested, and willing, to give new kinds of data services a try.
