In 1868, Ayer gave up an offer of seven hundred and ninety nine dollars a year to teach and entered the world of advertising. He started his career, working for Dr. Boyd, a friend of his father. Dr. Boyd was a director of a weekly religious newspaper, called the National Baptist. Ayer was offered a twenty five percent commission, selling an advertising space for the publication. By the end of the year, he was offered an annual salary two thousand dollars.
