Nowadays, many people still have a problem of choosing between CRT and TFT monitors. Actually, there have been many changes in the monitor producing industry in the last years and the price of TFT monitors has been significantly decreased. At the same time, a 15 CRT monitor is the minimum technical characteristic, which is allowed for a computer monitor. 14 inches were forgotten long time ago. Thus, let us take a look at main differences of CRT and TFT technologies.
Everyone knows how the CRT technology works, as it has been produced for many years. Such computer monitors use the same principle as a usual home TV. There is an electronic gun in the narrow part of the hermetic retort. There is a flat surface at another side, which has a wider flat area. This surface is covered with a phosphor layer that is able to emit the light when bombed with electrons. Existing different types of CRT monitors have flat or convex screens. A flat screen provides a much better quality of the image without distortions. The 15 CRT monitor is the minimum characteristic for a computer display, which provides a sufficient quality of the image.
There are also some pseudo flat models. Pseudo flat monitors use the following principle - the screen is hidden by the case, made of high quality glass. These monitors distort the image the same way as convex displays do. The CRT technology becomes less popular in favor of LCD displays. The sales of CRT monitors are going very low and the 15 CRT monitor is the minimum type of display, which you can still find in the market.
The principle of LCD monitor's work is based on optical properties of some transparent materials to change the angle of the plane of polarization, depending on the current strength. Each cell with this liquid is placed between the contacts of a thin transistor (TFT). This TFT matrix changes the voltage and makes the plane of polarization for the liquid change. There is a dial light behind the plane with liquid crystals. Liquid crystals change the polarization angle. In this way the display changes the intensity of passing light or stops its passing for each point of the screen. The summary of all these points (pixels) is a resolution for the LCD display. Actually, the resolution of the 15 CRT monitor is the minimum resolution, which exists for today. A color image at the screen consists of three main colors: red, blue and green. The panel of the color filter controls the variation of colors.
Both CRT and TFT displays have differences in the construction, i.e. they have advantages and disadvantages. CRT monitors have a better viewing angle, an operating speed and color rendering. At the same time, LCD displays for today are using advanced technologies, which make their technical characteristics very close to CRT analogues. Simultaneously, LCD panels are very convenient, compact and they require less power. TFT monitors are less hazardous to health of the worker, since they do not have an electronic gun and an emission level is minimal. LCD monitors are more popular for office of home computers.
