Divination and the Meaning of GeloscopyDivination is the ability to predict the future or discover hidden knowledge using physical forms such as animals, strange occurrences, natural phenomena, cards, and celestial bodies. Astrology is one of the most popular forms of divination. However, geloscopy is also a method of divination. The definition of geloscopy is foretelling the future through the use of laughter.
Divination is the practice of using signs and physical forms to interpret the future or to uncover hidden knowledge. Divination involves religious beliefs and supernatural abilities. It is a universal cultural phenomenon that has been observed in many cultures throughout humankind's history. The principle behind divination is that there is an essential link between inner and outer reality. The practice recognizes that human beings are not isolated or alone but are a part of a unified cosmos. Therefore information can be derived from analyzing what seems like random phenomena in the outer/physical world.
Julian Jaynes, a psychologist, categorize divination into to the following types:
•Omens are signs such has strange occurrences or natural phenomena that are said to predict the future. For instance, in the United States a black cat is seen as a sign of bad luck. However, omens can be either good or bad.
•Sortilege involves using sticks, stones, bones, beans, rice, and other small items to cast upon a plate, the ground, or other objects. The pattern that the stones or beans makes is used to foretell the future or uncover hidden information.
•In general, augury is an event, an experience, or a sign that gives an indication that something is about to happen. More specifically it involves predicting the future based on animals - their behaviors and appearance.
•Spontaneous divination does not use any particular media to see into the future. The answer that one is seeking can come from whatever object the diviner happens to come in contact with.
There are various methods of divination including geloscopy. The definition of geloscopy is the use of someone's laughter - tone or manner - to foretell the future or discover unknown information.
Traditionally the use of geloscopy involved a prophesying medium (a person who has the ability to perform paranormal feats) going into a trance and developing a hysterical laugh. While in this state the medium was able to make predictions. In modern times the use of geloscopy involves a diviner (a person who uses divination to foretell the future) analyzing a person's laughter to determine their character or predict future events.
Geloscopy is just one of many forms of divination. Other methods of divination include astrology (divination using celestial bodies), ailuromancy (divination using the behavior of felines), and dactylomancy (divination using the movement of fingers). The legitimacy of geloscopy and other forms of divination is debatable. Some people do not believe in it, while others use it to guide their lives. Astrology, one of the most popular forms of divination, is a part of popular culture. Who does not know their zodiac sign? Most people have read the horoscope that is listed in many daily newspapers at least once.
