There have been many studies done and reports publish on the different ways that we as individuals learn. Some individuals are able to excel in the traditional school environment where a teacher stands in front of a classroom full of students and shares from a book or other teaching module about a particular aspect of a subject. This information is then extracted from the class by means of a prepared written test. In this environment, learning takes place using the eyes and ears; with the ears being the primary sensory organ engaged. This auditory type learning focuses on us listening and then applying what we’ve heard to answer written questions. For those who are able to, comprehend words they listen to in such a way that they can then turn around and share with some accuracy, convey the information they have heard, this process works. For others, however, it does not.

For those individuals who are best served by actual hands on learning and implementation, a different type of teaching style must be engaged. These individuals learn most effectively by employing a different method of teaching in order to be able to convey, with the same amount of accuracy, what they have learned. This is difficult to do in the conventional class room environment as the teacher is subject to a time limit within which certain curriculum is to be taught to many students at the same time.

The findings of numerous studies tell us that we all have different learning styles and, that if we are exposed to different methods of instruction; information is retained differently with each individual. As mentioned above, it is very difficult to cater to the specific needs of one or two people in a classroom who are visual learners when the vast majority are auditory learners, or vice versa. Home education is one option that many parents whose children have not excelled in the classroom environment have undertaken in order to help their children succeed.

Home education is exactly what it sounds like. Someone from home providing the education needed at home. This is a very serious responsibility and is monitored by the state in which you live. In order to make sure that the instruction provided by home education is meeting the standards of what is taught in the classroom setting, the same tests are administered and evaluated for each individual in the same manner. Home education is something that any parent may choose to do for their children; the parent does not need to be a formal educator or have a degree in formal education.

There are others reasons why parents choose to home school their children. Violence, inability of the school to successfully provide the least restrictive environment in which a child can excel and other personal choices may all factor into a parent’s decision to home school their child or children. Homeschooling today holds a very different classification than it did years ago. Home education is something that we just implemented in our home for our thirteen year old daughter who is physically and mentally challenged. Not able to comprehend anything more than a three month old child, Jessica stays at home and receives physical and occupational therapy at home and this is considered her home education. Since she does not learn academically, she is not held to the same standards as the other children anyway. It allows us to keep Jessica home during bad whether days and monitor more closely her health situations.
