Wrestling Is the Guys' Soap Opera

Pro wrestling is the man's version of One Life To Live. With the constant battle of good versus evil and the parade of colorful characters it is very easy to see the entertainment value of this sport of the gladiators. But have you ever really thought about just how many cylinders pro wrestling hits on in the average guy's engine? The correlation between what a guy wants in his entertainment, and what pro wrestling has to offer, is nearly perfect.
Think about what a man really wants out of his television entertainment. Violence of course. Good versus Evil is always welcome. Some screaming fans to add to the tension. Sprinkle in a couple of scantly clad girls and you have the perfect male entertainment. Pro wrestling is the perfect male entertainment. How can I say it is perfect? Let’s boil down what pro wrestling is in reality. It is the clash of good versus evil contained in one easy to follow ring with screaming fans all around and ladies in bikinis prancing around as well. The only emotional involvement is to pick which guy you want to root for and how badly you want to see the guy you just cannot stand get hurt. Guys love it when there is a very minimal emotional involvement in a television program. We don’t want to take the time to figure out who loves who and does this girl really trust that guy and who is running away to Vegas to get married. That is why the average guy just cannot watch regular soap operas. There is way to much emotion involved.

That is the one element that can determine if a guy will truly get into a regularly schedule television program. Emotion. Wrestling is very basic in its approach to emotion. Either you like someone, you hate them, or you could care less about them. Any other emotion brought into the equation is done so at the satirical level and is taken less than seriously. A guy’s attention span to emotion in his entertainment is very limited. We can pay attention to a lover’s triangle in a movie just long enough to see who gets shot at the end. But to expect us to care about who loves who and all of the levels of feelings that go along with that for an entire television season is asking way too much.

It isn’t that we don’t know how important emotion is to society and to the fairer sex. We understand how feelings are necessary and we do incorporate feelings into our everyday lives. We love our wives or girlfriends, we love our kids, and we hate our bosses. We have all of that completely under control as far as real life is concerned. But when we reach out to an entertainment outlet to forget about reality for a while we would like the emotional aspect at a minimum. Wrestling is perfect for this because pro wrestling only uses emotion to move their story lines. Emotion isn’t part of the plot and emotion isn’t going to change the outcome of a story. If a wrestling bad guy, or heel as he is known in the business, is going to get a beating then no change of heart is going to derail that. The man is getting his beating.

Sometimes pro wrestling can go too far. I have seen things on pro wrestling that have made me very uncomfortable. But that is the essence of the cliffhanger. That is what they use to get you coming back for more. Guys want to be totally disgusted and offended sometimes. We don’t mind. A little shock and horror is good for a guy’s soul. The thing that helps us get through it is that we know it is all acting. Sometimes it is some of the worst acting we have ever seen but, as long as we don’t have to follow some sappy love story, then we are just fine.
