Traditionally the hostess or hostesses of bridal showers not only plan the decorations and provide refreshments, but they also make provision for some sort of entertainment, usually in the form of games in which all the guests may participate. This ritual of wedding shower games is both designed to put everyone at ease and to be an icebreaker assuming that friends of the bride and friends of the groom will not necessarily know one another.
Some wedding shower games can lead toward the risque, but if the guest list includes the respective mothers and grandmothers, it's best to keep things a little more "clean" in tone. One of the more popular ways to do this is with various word scramble games. These word scramble games, similar to puzzles that appear in daily newspapers, take words that are wedding themed and jumble them up.
For instance in word scramble games, "honeymoon" may be listed as "ohnomoney" or "champagne" becomes "camphange". Traditionally in word scramble games participants are given sheets of paper with a list of these garbled words and an adjacent blank column in which they will write their answers.
A popular way to conduct word scramble games at wedding showers is to set a time limit for the participants to translate the transposed letters. The word scramble solver is the one who finishes the greatest number of words in the appointed time. Consequently the word scramble solver gets some sort of prize, usually something funny, silly, or whimsical.
It is not uncommon for the order of events at a wedding shower to be: (1) the arrival of guests. (2) the partaking of refreshments and visiting, (3) the opening of gifts, and (4) the playing of word scramble games or other such ?icebreaker? activities. Each of these stages of a wedding shower offers ample opportunities for the taking of candid snapshots but right through the opening of the gifts a certain decorum is usually observed. The game play at the end of the shower makes provision for a more relaxed atmosphere and some silliness from the participants who are, usually, young women who have known one another most of their lives.
For the hostess or hostesses planning a wedding shower many resources are available not only for the etiquette involved in the event but also for choosing appropriate games. Often bridal magazines run articles on these kinds of activities or books of games and suggested word scrambles can be bought in bridal shops for bookstores proper. In more recent years these kind of resources have also become available on bridal-themed websites.
Any social occasion always raises the awful possibility of the event falling flat with the guests. Wedding showers are no exception and pre-planning, including the selection of icebreaker games, is as important as choosing what kind of cake to serve and what flavor of punch will find its way into the bowl. Of these activities, word scramble games have proven to be a wedding shower staple because they are easy to play and usually involve no embarrassment for more shy participants.
