Women's undergarments are available in forms from industrial strength everyday wear through silk and satin romantic evening attire. When did underwear become such an important facet of a woman's life that she must carry a closet full of versatile inventory, depending on the task or event at hand? Because style is important to them, even for a garment that may never be seen.
A common conundrum for women is; should I choose my Women’s undergarments for comfort, or should I choose them to accentuate my attributes and minimize my physical flaws. Women have been conditioned through advertising onslaughts to ensure that their undergarments must not show lines through their pants. In order to address that particular issue, they will spend hard earned treasure to purchase an item that by its very name insinuates discomfort: the “thong.” Who, in their right mind can wear such a thing and be comfortable? From the male perspective, I don’t know how, but in all honesty can appreciate “the look.”
Women's undergarments during the Victorian and Edwardian eras were made of linen or silk with elaborate embroidery and floral crochet designs. As intricate as the garments were, they were never seen except by the woman’s husband or her attendants. It was not unusual for a woman to layer combinations of undergarments underneath her floor length dress using pantaloons, petticoat, slips, a bodice, camisole, bloomers, a bustier and of course stockings.
Each of the above Women's undergarments had a function, whether it was to enhance a woman’s sense of modesty, accentuate her womanly figure, or hide flaws in her shape. A bustier could cinch a woman’s waistline and lift a woman’s bosom, creating a greater differential between bust and waist lending to a more pronounced hourglass shape.
Completing the hourglass figure was the petticoat, an undergarment generally made of nylon today that is worn much like a slip but its layered and somewhat stiff construction allows a dress to appear full as in most wedding gowns.
Unlike men’s underwear, Women's undergarments serve not only a myriad of functions from body shape corrections to enticement and sexual appeal. Whether a woman wants to add size and shape to a modest bust, reduce the size of her derriere, or remove inches from her waistline, there is an undergarment that will address the issue.
Fashion designers have not lost sight of the fact that women will demand that there undergarments should not only be functional, but must be sexy, pretty and above all, feminine. One need only stroll through any of the leading Women’s undergarment purveyor’s stores to see that these products must be “girlie” and sexy.
Women enjoy dressing up and their undergarments are a key element in how the final dress garment will look, how they will feel in it and how confident they will be in how they look. Once the “drop dead” gorgeous black evening gown is put on, the high heels slipped into, and the Tiffany is around the neck, the wrist, on the ears and ring fingers, there is only the mink coat left to complete the ensemble.
These last steps take only moments and it is the completed vision that others will see, but the fussing and labor was in the steps leading up to the final dressing; the selection of the prettiest and sexiest Women’s undergarments that no one will see, but that she will not feel complete without.
