Witjira National Park in the Outback of Australia

Witjira National Park is located in the far northern part of Southern Australia. Bordering on the western edge of the Simpson Desert, it covers an area of 7,770 square kilometers and considered to be the best of Australia‘s remote areas. Since its establishment in 1985 visitors have found the landscape in Witjira National Park absolutely spectacular. Within these springs are some very unique species of fish and also some rare aquatic life. This area is also home to many different bird kinds.

The Dolhousie area of Witjira has areas for camping and updated visitor facilities. This, added with the beauty of the thermal springs, make Witjira one of the most popular national parks to visit and stay.

The camping facilities at Dolhousie Springs have been upgraded to provide campers with beautiful camping spots, showers, and toilets. The day pass area has also been renovated.

There is also primitive camping available in other areas of Witjira, but you will need to bring your own water supply with you, along with a wood supply that you have purchased along the way.

You will be able to obtain a day pass for the park for $20 or you can buy a yearly pass for $90.

Many visitors come to Witjira to enjoy the beauty, and splendor of this great national park. Therefore, in order to allow others to view the same magnificent sites that you have been allowed to here in Witjira, you are asked to do a few things in order to preserve the beauty and wonder of this park. There is also a list of things not to do.

You are asked to do the following
* obtain an updated information packet
* carry enough fuel, water and food
* travel in groups if it’s possible
* take a portable stove with you for cooking, or make a small campfire
* keep from polluting the water
* keep your campsites away from the waters where native animals will come to drink
* pay attention to gates and private roads and don’t disturb them
* leave things as you found them.

You are asked to not do the following
* do not bury your trash; instead take it with you
* do not carry a gun unless it is dismantled
* do not plan on capturing any animal
* do not bring a chainsaw unless it is dismantled
* do not feed the animals
* do not remove anything belonging to the Aborigines
* do not use soap or detergent in the streams

Some of the things to do while in the national park of Witjira are:
* go exploring and learn about the salt pans, flat-topped mesas and the gibber plain
* check out and visit the early European ruins
* look at the beautiful and brilliant blooms on the flowers
* go bush walking, or swimming, or camping
* definitely do some bird watching

You will find that the best time span to visit this area is from April to October. Keep in mind that there are limited amounts of facilities for camping as well.
