Which Treatments For Prostate Cancer Are Best For You?

Added: 01/29/2006

Treatments for prostate cancer are always under study. With no known cure for prostate cancer it is important that studies do continue to figure out why prostate cancer happens, and also the most important part how to combat it. There are some treatments that can be taken and they do help, but the medicines that are being tried at the moment are a case of hit and miss.

Years of development and study lead to a wide array of treatments for prostate cancer. Including surgery, radiation, hormone deprivation therapy, chemotherapy, dietary changes, and use of a variety of herbal supplements. It is very difficult to decide which treatment is right for you.
Prostate cancer is a disease that is complex. The growth rate is slow and it is very difficult, nearly impossible, to determine which treatment is the best for which man.

The most important part of making an informative final decision is to collect as much information as possible. It may also be a good idea to get a second or third opinion on the matter. Start by gathering information about your particular cancer. Also, find out all your options of the vast amount of treatment options. That will help you make an informed decision on which treatments for prostate cancer are best for you.

Experts in the field of hospice and palliative care usually provide direct care to the cancer patient. Terminally ill patients usually enter medical studies that are experimental or receive palliative care treatments. Most usually spend the last days weeks of their lives receiving treatment. Palliative patients have no hope for further treatment of diagnosis. The palliative care patients have a very small chance of improving, without suffering emotional damage.

Hospice is a philosophy of care. It recognizes the final stage of life and tries to make the last days as pain-free as possible. Hospice, one of the later treatments for prostate cancer, treats the person, rather than the disease. Care not only includes the patient, but the patient's family as well. Most hospice care services are offered in-home. The goal is to make the patient as comfortable as possible. Expectancy for death is usually no longer than 6 months.

Among the many treatments for prostate cancer is surgery. Surgery is the oldest cancer treatment there is. The constant advances of surgical techniques have opened a whole new field, allowing surgeons to operate on a vast amount of patients. Surgery treatments for prostate cancer have become less invasive, as many other surgeries have.  The ultimate goal is to remove the cancerous tumors while trying to keep as much functioning normally as possible.

Other treatments of prostate cancer include radiation therapy. It attacks reproducing cancer cells. The downfall being that it can affect the reproducing of normal tissues, as well.  The damage to the normal cells causes the side effects. A balancing act between destroying the cancer and sparing the normal cells is what the result each time radiation therapy is administered. It was once believed that treatment using radiation therapy could not be repeated. Recent and more up to date studies have proven that a second course of radiation therapy is possible.

The above are just a few of the treatments of prostate cancer available. I strongly suggest that you contact the local cancer society. The information that is obtainable through their service is astronomical.

Don't wait; call them today to schedule an appointment with a counselor. It could be the most important decision you'll ever make.
