Which commercial gym should you join?

As many commercial gyms as there are in existence today, many more have gone out of business. Choosing a commercial gym should involve investigating whether or not they've been in business for a while or just a short time. Also find out what types of programs they offer. If a commercial gym has just popped up in the area and is offering only the latest and greatest spinning and yoga programs, chances are they won't be around for very long. Joining a commercial gym such as this will only have you back out on the hunt in a year or two.
Feeling and looking good are two of the top reasons that people join a commercial gym. Price is the one reason why MORE people don’t join gyms. There are many other reasons as well, time to actually spend working out at a gym is a big one and the fact that most people have children who cannot go with them to the gym is another. Feeling good about joining a gym is important, too. Some people are comfortable in any environment as they are currently fit and just maintaining the work they’ve already put in to establish their bodies and routines. Then there are others to whom privacy is important. Not that they be allowed to rent the gym and exercise alone, just that some are more comfortable going someplace where they do not know anyone. This eliminates the awkwardness of running into that co-worker at the gym who is getting to watch you work off all the less than healthy food you consume in her sight in between meetings. Can’t you hear the conversations now? “I saw so-and-so at the gym last night…shouldn’t she save herself a few dollars if she’s going to eat like THAT?” How embarrassing!

A commercial gym can be very rewarding. The availability of personal trainers, the best in fitness equipment and the luxury of hot tubs, pools, steam rooms and sauna’s all entice many to join a commercial gym. Exercise programs geared toward aerobic exercise, yoga and pilates, strength training and others are held in rooms apart from the general population and involve those who share your fondness for that particular type of fitness activity. Groups listen to music and move together to obtain and strengthen certain areas of the body. Older people can enjoy the pool as well as companionship while attending the stretching and aquatic programs offered for seniors.

Some commercial gym programs offer babysitting for certain classes geared to reintroduce new moms to the routine of exercising. This enables the traffic flow to be stabilized a bit, too. The seniors, second and third shift workers and stay-at-home moms usually will frequent a commercial gym during the day, while those who work outside the home during a first shift or swing shift may frequent the commercial gym during the late afternoon to early evening hours.

Recently, during a 24 hour fitness commercial on television, the process of spinning was demonstrated by people who looked as if they’d done it all their lives. It is a simple process in which the participant sits on a stationary spinning bike and does the act of pedaling the bike as one would on the road. This is a VERY effective exercise and can be duplicated in your own home without the cost of a spinning bike. All that is needed is your own road bike and a set of stationary rollers. This enables you to “ride” during the winter months in the privacy of your own home and without the expense of joining a commercial gym.

In any case, it is wise to do some shopping before you invest your hard earned dollars into any commercial gym. The investment is not small and normally, is not made for a short period of time as contracts and other obligatory paperwork is involved. The monthly payment must fit into your budget as easily as you’ll fit into your new clothes!
