Where to Go for Christian Advice

Added: 08/14/2006

Who should the Christian turn to for Christian advice when he or she has a need? Should they run to the pastor first thing? Or what about their best friend at church? There are many sources for Christian advice available today, but Christians need to use discernment when seeking advice for their lives. Read more about the many options for seeking Godly advice.

Christians often wonder whom to turn to for advice when they have a need in their lives. All you have to do is turn on the TV in the afternoon to see people who want to give advice. Relationships, family, weight loss, psychology, and whatever else you can imagine, there is some guru out there who things they have the perfect solution. For the Christian, advice is a very important thing. Good Christian advice is hard to find, at times. Christians need to weed through the worldly advice offered so readily, and find quality Christian advice for their lives.

Where should a Christian go to get Christian advice? Let's think for a minute about Christian relationships. Christians view their relationships with others differently than many people in the world. Christian relationships have Christ as the center, rather than people. So when getting advice about relationships, Christians need to seek the right sources.

The best source of Christian advice is the Bible. It is through the Word of God that we recognize that we are sinners in need of a Savior, and it is through the Scripture that we accept the free gift of salvation through Christ alone. It follows naturally that the Bible is the source for advice in other issues in our lives. If the Bible clearly states what to do in a situation, then no other advice is needed.

Sometimes, however, the Bible is not entirely clear about a situation. It is then that the Christian needs to seem Christian advice. There are many Christian "self-help" books on the market at present. These books can be a great resource in finding quality advice, but the Christian needs to use discernment. Remember that unless something is written in the Scriptures, you need to compare whatever you read against the Scriptures. Find out whatever you can about the author of the book. Does he or she believe the same things that you do? This will give you a great insight into whether or not you want to accept what his person has written. Remember that people can be wrong.

Another place to receive Christian advice is at church. Seek out a brother or sister in Christ who is more mature in their relationship with the Lord than you. Tactfully explain your problem or situation, and listen to their advice. As with books, compare the advice you are given to the Scriptures.

If you need advice about something that is complicated or personal, consider going to your pastor. The pastor's job is to help shepherd the congregation into Christ-likeness. It is his job to help you become more like Christ, and if he can, he would be happy to give you the advice you need.

In summary, there are many places to go for Christian advice. The first source for advice for any Christian should be the Word of God. Often Christian books can help bring light to a situation. Other brothers and sisters in Christ are a great place to go for advice as well. Finally, the pastor of your church is usually willing to offer advice. Just remember that man is fallible, but the Scriptures are not, so compare whatever advice you receive with the Word of God.
