What Is The Sadie Hawkins Day Celebration and How Did It Get Started?

The Sadie Hawkins Day is celebrated on the Saturday following November 9th. This day was called this after a girl whose name was Sadie Hawkins. Al Capp, whose famous comic strip Lil Abner started this holiday in Lil Abner's fictional hometown of DogPatch. Sadie Hawkins was the ugliest girl in all of DogPatch, so every year known as Sadie Hawkins Day, all the girl's in town get to switch the tables on the guy's, they chase until they catch one and force him across the finish line, afterwards he is made to become married to her.
The poor homely Sadie Hawkins was daughter to DogPatch resident Hezekbiah Hawkins. At thirty-five years of age, Sadie Hawkins was considered to be an old maid, her father, Hezekbiah in pure desperation, declared the day to be called the Sadie Hawkins Day. He said that since his daughter could not find a husband he would help her along. Once his gun was fired the guy’s would start to run, after they had a pretty good lead, but not too good, the gun would be fired again and the girl’s would start to run after them, once a guy was caught by a girl and forced over the finish line he would then have to get married to her.

All the old maids in DogPatch thought the idea was a grand one. So, the Sadie Hawkins day became something which was annually celebrated.

The comic strip Lil Abner, mentioned in November 13th, 1937 the Sadie Hawkins Day with the actual race happening November 19th through November the 30th comic strips. The Sadie Hawkins Day tradition was born and appeared continually every year thereafter.
