What Is SPAM And What Does A Spam Blocker Do?

Added: 05/09/2007

You could win $10,000 if you click on this website link! Please help us, you are a beneficiary of a lot of money, just call with your bank account information and we will immediately transfer funds into your account. Have you ever heard seen any of this in your subject line or body of your email? Well, this is called spam and it can at times not only be annoying but also dangerous.

The true definition of spam is rather easy. Spam is just another word for people advertising online via banners, email or other methods to promote products, service and sometimes fraudulent items to target those who may not normally look or be interested in their products. It’s always annoying when you open your email and see many different emails from people who you have no clue who they are. Usually you can get a spamblocker or pop up blockers that will stop this from getting to you. But there are other ways in which spam can reach you and it can also cost you and your ISP money. It costs the readers of the spam because some actually pay per each time they log onto the internet. This can be quite expensive when they have to pay like this because they are reading all of their email. Another thing to remember is if spam becomes too much of a problem for your ISP you will either see additional charges or rates will go up.

The other problem with spam users is that they get their email addresses by searching the internet and also by stealing others email lists. This makes it so that they have email addresses even when they aren’t searchable online. As stated this is so they can target people who normally would not look at their products. You also have to verify whether or not what they are doing is even legal. Think about child pornography; it is illegal in the United States but there are people out there that send spam mail advertising child pornography websites. This is illegal and you can find ways in which you can turn people in for that. Emails have a way of catching up to you no matter what you do to try and stop them.

There are so many ways in which you can try and protect your computer. A spam blocker can be retrieved in many different ways. The first is right through your ISP provider or you email provider; example Yahoo. Your ISP provider has a spam blocker on their system and it should be stopping spam from even entering their server. At times one or two may get through which is when you need to contact your ISP and advise them of the problem. Yahoo and AOL also have spam blockers. If you get spam mail you actually mark the email as spam and there will be no more that enter your email address unless they use a different email address when sending the email. This is the easiest way to block spam from coming through. If neither is working you can download spam blockers via internet or other programs. You just have to be careful that they are legitimate prior to download. You don’t want any of them to actually be spyware on top of trying to block the spam.
Spam can be quite annoying but know more about it and how to control it will hopefully make your life easier. There are many different places you can go to read more on the topic. Always be careful when going onto websites, there are people out there that use your moving around to actually send more spam. It’s a never ending circle or pyramid. You can also check with your local ISP to see what they do to help with spam and also go to any computer store and they may be able to recommend a program in which you can use that is legitimate and you won’t have anything to worry about. Computer repair people are usually up to date on all of their programs.
