1.An online ministry may be an extension of an existing church; ministries online will permit an already existing congregation to reach a parishioner who may be out of town by posting a copy of a sermon, posting study guides to allow her or him to stay unified with the congregation in a course of study, or simply to post announcements. Additionally, and established congregation will be able to post information about services, office hours, and the various ministries available to someone who might be looking for a church home.
2.Of course, an online ministry is not necessarily part and parcel of a brick and mortar church and congregation. Many small ministries have sprung up as faithful Christians hear the call to share their gospel with those around them. Some do so in the form of posting daily devotionals to a website. Others may post articles they write, opinion pieces, and perhaps also warnings they see fit to share. For many Christians, this has become a veritable outlet against sins they are either struggling with themselves, or find that many others have a hard time getting over.
3.Some online ministry websites are commercial ventures. They may be online Bible schools that offer an Internet course of study in such topics as apologetics, Christian studies, Christian education, and also seminary studies. While some may offer bona fide degrees, others may not.
4.An online ministry may be tied to a minister, televangelist, or radio preachers. Usually there are a large number of sermons that a visitor may download or read for free, perhaps even audio files for the faithful to listen to, and at times a link to a book the minister may have written. These may be purchased from the website as well. Some of the more established online ministries may have a large number of resources available to a variety of age groups and life situations. There may be articles and guides for single people, teenagers, pre-teens, married couples, and even the individual undergoing a divorce or separation.
As you can see, an online ministry is truly an effective and useful tool for any congregation or minister who wishes to reach more people than he possibly can by telephone or on Sunday morning. As a matter of fact, it allows the faithful and those who want to be to reach the ministry whenever it fits into their schedule!
It does not take a lot to start such an online ministry. If you are interested in pursuing it either as an individual or as a member of a congregation who wishes to extend the church's reach to the Internet, you will simply need to create a website, think through the needs of the people to whom you minister and then post materials they will find useful. Churches in particular will find it useful to post a credo or set of beliefs so that anyone in need for a new church home will easily be able to find out if their understanding of Scripture and the church's beliefs are compatible.
