Feminism comprises a number of social, cultural, and political movements along with theories and moral philosophies that are concerned with cultural, political, and economic practices and inequalities that discriminate against women. Feminism is also described as an ideology focusing on the equality of both sexes. Many feminist currently regard feminism as a grass roots movement that seeks to cross boundaries based on social class, race, culture, and religion. They also argue that an effective feminism movement should address universal issues such as rape, incest, and prostitution. Feminism explores issues such as stereotyping, patriarchy, sexual objectification, and gender oppression. There are many people who subscribe to the feminism movement such as Bell Hooks, Betty Friedan, and Gloria Steinem. These women probably are familiar with what a feminism term is and what it involves.
Did you know that there are different types of feminism today such as liberal feminism, radical feminism, and eco feminism? Radical feminism sees the capitalist sexist hierarchy as the defining feature of women’s oppression. Liberal feminism hopes to assert the equality pf men and women through political and legal reform. Eco feminism links ecology with feminism. Eco feminists see the domination of women as steaming from the same ideologies that bring about the domination of the environment. Patriarchal systems, where men both own and control the land, are seen as responsible for the oppression of women and the destruction of the natural environment. There seems to be many feminism movements, however there doesn’t seem to be only one feminism term.
