What A Good Profile Edit Will Do For You

Added: 10/31/2005

Once you start your online dating adventure, a lot will depend on your profile. Put the wrong words up or the wrong information and you could find yourself struggling as much in the online dating world as you were in the real world. A profile edit counselor will look for a lot of things in your profile to help, but before you take that step there are some things for which you can look on your own.

So you have started your online dating adventure. You got online, filled out a dating profile, and are sitting back and waiting. Problem is, you just keep waiting. Maybe the problem is that you need a good solid profile edit. Even if you have seen a sample dating profile on the site you have chosen to use, it likely doesn't show you what to do or what not to do in your profile. Many companies will offer you a profile edit for a fee, but before you take that big of a step, think about some of the things they will look at first.

First and foremost, the experts who offer profile edit for a fee look at the overall profile. Most say that it should be around 200-250 words, about 150-200 of those should be about you, and about 50-100 of them should be about the person you are looking for. It should be factual but casual. It should allow people to know you without coming across as a resume. Overall, just make sure it is fun and interesting. A good online dating experience is about more than just a quick glance at a sample dating profile and throwing a resume-like file on line.

Take a look and do your own profile edit. Did you discuss your career history and plans briefly? Let people know what jobs you have had and what you plan to do with your future. Your profile is like the first conversation you are having with a  potential date, and most people talk first about what they do. Just make sure you don't drone on and on.

If you have children, did you mention them only or did you tell a little about them. Your children are a big part of your life, so people interested in dating you should know you are a normal parent. Mention their ages in the profile and if they live with you. Just give their ages or something brief. If you haven't done this, it's just one more profile edit you need to perform.

When you are doing your profile edit, did you notice whether or not you mentioned where you have lived? Especially if you have moved around a lot it will help people get interested in you. For instance, if you live in Denver, but have also lived in Indianapolis and Dayton, someone with an Indiana connection may be more likely to write to you. If you have lived abroad, make sure you add that in, people are fascinated by other cultures and far-off places.

Someone doing a profile edit will also likely look to see if you have added other things about yourself that someone may find interesting. For instance, do you speak a foreign language or two? If you do, mention it. Things just like that attract attention. Also, don't be afraid to mention some of your family genealogy. Basically, keep anything that may draw someone to you on the profile.

Make sure you are completely clear. A profile edit will usually involve a lot of cutting of fluff in your dating profile. When you talk about the person you are looking for, for instance, be clear about what you want. At the same time, don't limit yourself. In other words, if, for instance, you don't want to date anyone with children, make sure you put that in the profile.

Just make sure you only put things that you are very sure about so that you don't limit your potential mates too much. Also, make sure you mention whether you are seeking a stable relationship or just want to make friends and go from there. Just remember, honesty is always the best way to go.
