Manhattan is also one of a very few American cities that is a destination location for weddings. Weddings in Manhattan can be extremely costly however; few cities offer such beautiful, historical and sumptuous cathedrals, churches and synagogues. All of the amenities for an extravagant wedding are readily available and combined with Manhattan’s “star power”; it makes what might be just another wedding, a Manhattan event.
Honeymooners and tourists alike will have the difficult choice of listing those Manhattan events they wish to attend within the confines of their time in the Big Apple. Must see, must do Manhattan events might include the obligatory ride to the top of the Empire State Building where you are provided a breathtaking 360 degree view of New York City. Perhaps a walk through Little Italy and lunch at Lombardi’s, long regarded as the best pizza in the United States and a canole from one of many Italian bakeries? Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty offer ongoing tours throughout the day. All of these locales and sites can be reached by using the famous New York City subway system or they are within a pleasant walking distance.
Even if you are staying elsewhere in Manhattan, a visit to the fabulous Waldorf Astoria should be included on your agenda. If you are staying at the Waldorf, the theatre district is only a short taxi cab ride away, as are many of mid-town’s fine restaurants. If attending theatre, most shows are in and around Times Square, a magnificently well lit district that is best seen at night. If you plan ahead, the world famous Rockettes still dance in their perfectly synchronized show at the Radio City Music Hall.
Don’t miss taking a walk through Central park and lunch at the Tavern on the Green or the equally famous Carnegie Delicatessen. Daytime strolls along streets with household names such as Park Avenue, Madison Avenue and Broadway are a great way to see the city among the skyscrapers. If you get hungry, there is a New York hot dog vendor on every corner.
Holidays are a special time in New York City. Manhattan events include the Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Christmas season is an especially wondrous time in New York, as has been depicted in a number of films such as Miracle on 34th Street. It seems New Year’s Day is not officially rung in until the great ball in Times Square is lowered at midnight, thrilling hundreds of thousands of holiday revelers.
Whether your interest is in the history of New York City and its plethora of museums, art galleries and historical buildings and monuments, or the city’s legendary nightlife, theatre and fine dining, or the tourist attractions you’ve heard about all your life, you will find your interest satisfied. If a romantic getaway or your wedding plans draw you to New York, be sure to include a night time carriage ride through Central Park.
