The Farmer's Market at Greenville is a big hit with the people of the city and visitors of the city. The Farmer's Market features market square vendors who offer the best of the season's crops. The history of Greenville is interesting and unique. The city was name after Thomas J. Green who was a general in the Texas Army during the independence war from Mexico. Green later became a member of Congress for the Republic of Texas. The flag of Greenville is a variation of the Texas flag and was constructed in 1845. The flag of Greenville is red and white with a blue stripe with stars crossing it at an angle. Greenville was almost named "Pickneyville" in honor of James Pickney Henderson, the first governor of Texas.
The Greenville Municipal Auditorium also features many musical events throughout the year including the Greenville Entertainment Series. Performances will include Chris Knight, Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival, "Puttin' on the Hitz" by Irving Berlin, the Little Eagles of Siberia, Terry Myers Orchestra, Time for Three, The Newstead Trio and The Four Freshmen. Performances begin in October 2006.
If you are interested in cycling, the Greenville Area Social Pedalists club (GASP) hosts cycling races. The main event of the season is the OmniSYS Cotton Patch Classic. The race is held in September and bicyclists can register online for the race. The race begins at the Greenville Courthouse Square.
Greenville is a unique city and has also been home to a few famous people. Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier in World War II, spent most of his life in Greenville. The Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum contains memorabilia related to both Audie Murphy and the cotton industry in Texas. Monty Stratton also lived in Greenville. He was a famous major league pitcher in baseball in the 1930's. Robert Neyland, a Hall of Fame Football Coach for Tennessee and decorated soldier in the U.S. Army. Ben Kweller, an American Rock Musician also lived in Greenville. Wade Wilson, a former NFL Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, resided in Greenville.
