Germans founded New Braunfels, Texas in 1845. The city has held on to its German roots by incorporating German into many of the areas attractions. German names can be seen on street signs and billboards throughout the city. Attractions such as Schlitterbahn and Wurstfest also incorporate the German heritage. Other major Texas cities including Austin, San Antonio and Houston are short drives away from New Braunfels.

The city of New Braunfels is older than the state of Texas itself. First founded by Prince Carl of Solmes-Braunfels in Germany, the town was named for Prince Carl's own hometown. Designed to be a haven for the many German immigrants in the Texas region, and perhaps even its own German principality in the Republic of Texas (until Texas became a state in December of 1845), the city is renowned today for its German flair.
