The republican reforms have brought radical changes to the status of women to an extent unprecedented in any Muslim country till that date. Women are educated, and pursue professions on par with men.
However the changes in some areas have been slow. Arranged marriages are still common in the countryside and among the more traditional, religious families. But in the cities the modern ideas of a girl-boy courtship, love and marriage are not uncommon. The equal status for women meant that Turkish youth are free to move about and meet Turkish singles and woo each other for marriage. Female virginity upon marriage is valued (and often expected), though it is not universal anymore.

There are different kinds of weddings in Turkey according to social and economic status of the couples. But usually, when a couple decides to marry, the boy's parents take the permission of the girl's parent to set the date of the engagement. Wedding gifts are exchanged between the parties.
The wedding ceremony is usually in a hotel ballroom. The bride and the groom enter the hall while the wedding march is being played. Afterwards the three parties i.e. a witness, a government officer and the couple sign a wedding certificate, and then the officer announces that the couple is officially married.
