The Great Basin Desert, the largest in the United States, covers two hundred thousand square miles between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Portions of the region are protected as part of the Great Basin National Park. Key features of the park are Lehman Caves, Wheeler Peak, and the ancient bristlecone pines (some of the pines are believed to be five thousand years old).
