Crater Lake NP (National Park) contains the deepest lake in the United States, the second deepest lake in the Western Hemisphere, and the seventh deepest lake in the world: Crater Lake. The lake, which is 1,932 feet deep, was formed 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama exploded violently. Because the interior of the volcano was severely weakened, it could no longer support the volcano; thus the top of it collapsed forming a caldera or basin that eventually accumulated 4.6 trillion gallons of water.
