Ivvavik National Park is important because it is the first park in Canada whose inception was the result of an aboriginal land claim. Located in the Yukon, Ivvavik National Park protects a diverse array of both plant and animal life. Ivvavik National Park is also important in protecting native culture itself - in fact, the word Ivvavik means "a place for giving birth, a nursery" in the Inuvialuit, the native people of the region.
