Traveling this summer? What will you need? Perhaps a pet cage?

Added: 07/19/2007

Are you planning on going on vacation this summer? Maybe you are going across country or maybe just to see some relatives about 4 hours away. No matter where you are going, you have to be sure to take all the things you need. Things you will need for yourself, your children and your pets. If you are anything like me, then you will right a checklist of stuff a week in your advance that needs to be packed. I am so bad about forgetting stuff.

I have noticed that I will even right down the little things like a toothbrush. That is because in the heat of the moment of packing everything. I end up forgetting those little important things. So making a checklist might save you time and money. If you have pets make sure you take your cage. It seems silly to make a list of these small things, you think you could never forget. But forgetting these things happens all the time. Don’t forget your dog food either.

I’ve seen people forget just about everything. Shoes, clothes, bathroom stuff, and paperwork they needed for the trip, cell phones, computers, and some have even forgotten their kids. Of course these people didn’t get very far down the road. But still you get my point. Mark down your stuff to take.

When traveling with kids, you want to remember to take toys as a bonus plan for enjoyment options for your children.

For babies:
You will want to take anything that looks shiny and bright.
Don’t forget rattles and different music makers.
You might want to think about taking some blocks; they make them in foam now, which is better for your baby.
Pop-up toys are always neat.
Every baby loves to look at themselves in the mirror. So maybe get a plastic mirror that hangs from your child’s car seat.

For Toddlers:
If you have room, balls might be a good thing to take with you on trips when you stop at rest areas.
Board books are great items to take with you. Children love them, mine do!
Make sure to take a blanket and a stuffed animal. This can be a good way to ensure your children get a much needed nap.
It is not advisable to take toys that make a huge amount of noise. Because from my experience I have found myself wanting to throw them out the window. 
So just to be safe, those might best be left at home. But of course, that’s all up to you.

For you little preschoolers:

Take something they can draw in. Washable crayons are very idea for trips. Well, they are pretty much idea for anytime you let a preschooler draw.
Finger puppets can be a great way to entertain and be entertained.
Sticker and activity books are fantastic.
Picture books
Masking tape can be fun, because kids this age have fun sticking it to stuff and then pulling it off. With masking tape though you don’t have to worry about it hurting your car or getting firmly stuck anywhere.
Little toys like plastic animals, dinosaurs.
Blocks are also a very good choice.

For kids a little older:
Try out an etch-a-sketch, aqua doodles or magna-doodles.
Small magnetic puzzles
Travel desk sets,
Felt boards
Stick- on play sets
Silly putty
Small action figures

For kids who are much, much older:

Books that don’t have many pictures
Activity kits
Deck of cards
Paper to play games on such as hangman or tic-tac-toe
Travel size games
Hand-held games
Cd-player or I-pod’s

Most children have their favorite things. And of course, as their mother or father you know what those things are. I know my kids always want to take books, Barbie’s and actions figures.

If you have pets, especially cage one, make sure you get a comfortable pet cage for them and make sure it’s more comfortable for them instead of you. Because in the end, that’s what makes the difference. A more comfortable animal makes a quieter trip. Some also, make sure whatever dog food you get doesn’t make your dog need more frequent bathroom stops.
Did you know that they even have playpens for your animals now? That’s really cool. No matter what cage you get for your animal, you may want to think about bringing their pillow or a blanket for them.

Also, no matter where you choose to go this summer be sure to be safe!
