When traveling in Arlington Virginia, you will discover a beautiful city with much history behind it. Arlington is located a short distance from Washington DC once you go across the Potomac River. There are several schools that can be visited and many historical attractions. The city is full of historical sites and would make a great day trip from Washington DC.

In Arlington Virginia, you will find a mostly urban culture with around 206,000 residents. The county was named in 1952 and was named after the house that stands in the middle of the cemetery that once belonged to Robert E. Lee. The house's name was Arlington House. The city is surrounded by Fairfax County, Falls Church, Alexandria, and Washington DC. It is interesting to note that if you traveled to Memorial Bridge in Arlington Virginia, you would be the same distance to Cumberland Gap as it is to Boston Massachusetts.

Several attractions that are located in Arlington Virginia are rich with history. One in particular attracts thousands of visitors each year. That is the Arlington National Cemetery. There are over 305,000 people buried there. The cemetery contains one of the most famous graves in the world. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier can be found here guarded night and day. The changing of the guard at the tomb is always an somber sight to watch. John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, as well as some of their children are buried in the Arlington Cemetery as well.

Another visitor attraction in Arlington Virginia would include the Pentagon. The Department of Defense has its headquarters located within the walls of the Pentagon. It is one the world's largest buildings and has five floors and close to 18 miles of corridors. One part of the building was seriously damaged by the attacks from September 11. It was hit by Flight 77 on one of the five sides.

The neighborhoods that are found in Arlington Virginia are sometimes referred to as if they were their own little town. These include Crystal City, Cherrydale, Pentagon City, Clarendon, and Lyon Village. Most of the neighborhoods in Arlington Virginia have a historic preservation or conservation plans in the works. Some of the homes you see built throughout the county are real homes bought from the Sears Catalog between 1910 and 1935. Usually they are a garden style variety and are wanted by many new home owners.

In Arlington Virginia, schools districts are known to spend up to half or more of their revenue on education. Close to 18,700 children attend public school. Nearly 9,000 go on to obtain degrees in their specific interests. The area has several colleges around that can be visited. George Mason University has a law school and a Public Policy school. There are many satellite networks for many of the nation's online colleges. These include Strayer and Devry. Marymount University, a private four year college can also be found here. The Institute of Art can be found at the Ames Center.

Transportation in Arlington Virginia can be by plane, bus, car, bicycle, or foot. The Reagan Washington National Airport can handle all your flying needs. There are also several path which you can ride your bike on to travel along the Potomac River. Most are off road trails and will be safe to ride with a bike without having to worry about traffic and buses. Interstate 395 has HOV High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes. If it is only you riding all alone in the lane, you will get a ticket. This lane is especially for those people carpooling or riding with a friend.
