To Get Christmas Tree

Added: 11/02/2007

As times change so do some of the things that we cherished as a child and sometimes that can be really sad. Some things about Christmas are changing more than we realize and someday we may no longer be able to go out and get a real Christmas tree because no one is selling them. Scoff now but it could happen and when it does future generations will have no idea what a real Christmas tree is.

The generation that are parents now remember the days when we were younger and we would head out in the snow with our parents to get Christmas tree for our home during the Christmas season. Getting a Christmas tree was an annual ritual that we all fell in love with and we all could probably outline the steps necessary to get Christmas tree like it happened yesterday. First you have to get everyone in the car because when you get Christmas tree you have to get one everyone likes or else you wind up arguing for the rest of the holidays about how if everyone had just listened to your sister then the Christmas tree would be beautiful this year. Once everyone is in the car then you all have to agree on where to get Christmas tree from. Of course this discussion, rapidly on its way to becoming an argument, could not happen in the nice warm house where everyone is comfortable. It simply must happen in the freezing car because every year dad just assumes we are going to the same place as last year and everyone else always has their own ideas. Mom wants to try the new place she saw as she was Christmas shopping the other day because it looks like a cute little tree place. Sister just wants to make sure they don’t go anywhere where her friends will see her out shopping with her dorky family. Brother wants to go to that cool place with all of the lights and decorations because they are awesome to look at. Dad just wants to go someplace cheap. As always Mom wins so it is off to the new place you go.

When you get to the Christmas tree lot that is when the fun really begins. Families rarely agree on anything in unison and when you are out to get your Christmas tree you do not have weeks to argue like you do when Dad announces that the family is going to Florida on vacation to play golf and Mom counteracts with something about her dead body and the inability for Dad to get over it. This has to happen that night so the arguing begins and inevitably everyone has to give a little or you will spend all night in the freezing cold. With the tree agreed upon it is taken home where it is set up in the stand so it can thaw overnight before it can be decorated. Brother never seems to understand that the family has to wait for a day before they can decorate and every year he has to be sent to his room because yelling at the top of his lungs can get annoying after a while. The next night it is time to decorate the tree.

Sister wants nothing to do with decorating the tree while decorating the tree is the closest thing to happy that Dad ever becomes all year long. Mom wants to make sure that all of the family heirloom decorations make it on to the tree and Brother just wants to see that thing covered in tinsel and glittering like a rock star. In the end you are left with a beautiful Christmas tree for your family’s holiday and wasn’t that worth it? It is a shame that such a family activity is disappearing because experiences like this is what makes a lifetime worth of memories. Inevitably everyone looks back on the chaos of getting a Christmas tree and wishes they could do it all over again.
