Thumbsucker - the Ideal Protagonist

Thumbsucker , directed by Mike Mills, happens to be one of the sensational films of the year 2005, dealing with a very controversial subject. The film is adapted from a novel of the same name by Walter Kirn. Now, what is the content of the novel to earn such an acclaim throughout the world? The content of the movie has as its subject or revolves round the protagonist Justic Cobb, played by Lou Pucci, and how he copes with his humungous problem of thumbsucking along with his experiments with hypnosis, sex and drugs.
The film Thumbsucker , from the very commencement revolves round the protagonist of the film Justin Cobb and his strange habits. Justin Cobb, from the very beginning, is depicetd as a shy 17-year old lad in a family consisted of four, in the suburban Oregon. As is shown, he has a relentless habit of thumbsucking which is totally dispproved by his father Mike Cobb. It is this notion that has led to a major orthodontic repair. His family as depicted in the film, Thumbsucker, is an assortment of strange things. It is depicetd in the cinema that he addresses his parents by their first names, Mike and Audrey, and that's due to his father's insecurity of aging! On the other hand her mother, a registered nurse, to gert rid of the bored life initiates an idle fascination with the known actor Matt Schramm, while making an entry into a conest to win a date with the celebrity. As is perceived this happenb to be one of the proudest omoments in her life, which she insists in a vigorius manner nothing except an "innocent fun", but it is projected time and again, that is extremely concerned with the need of looking attractive for the conest. Again, Justin as a young lad vies with others for a prominent position in the debate team of the school, led by one Mr. Geary. He joined the team to be in proximity of the smart and alluring environmentalist named Rebecca. It is at this juncture when his long desire of having a relation with her goes on the wane, for he gets outrightly rejected by her after he cannot open up toher abvout his thumbsucking habit. Being completely disheartened he makes a visit to his dentist. But here he also gets a good tharash, for his dentist Perry Lyman gets confirmed that he is confident over Justin's continuing habit of sucking his thumb. Having no other way he attempts the process of hypnosis, training Justin to find his own animal power like a deer, suggesting him that henceforth his thumb will taste like echinacea. This magic formula, however works, and Justin finds his thumb growingly distasteful, but however failes into deeper frustration without the crutch. Being furious at this Justin Cobb plans with his elder brother brother to disrupt Dr. Lyman in a bicycle race with his own father and at the ame time his school counseor prods the Cobbs to give him Ritalin. While his parents wring their hands over the idea, Justin insists that he needs the help.

However, within short days of the beginning of the treatment, Justin shows greatsigns of elevat energy, along with confidence and focus. With a reneed confidence he begins to excel on the debate team of the school, displacing Rebecca from the star position, who has no other option except to quit the debate team and drifts into the general audience. The saga of innovative spirit within Justin has instilled a new confidence in him, and this leads to the showering of awards from different corners. Being a changed person and an aggressive lad from now, he begins to challenge the neuroses of theadults around him, in paricular for their struggles with aging. This changed mood is best depicetd in his deceitful cover letter which he applies to NYU. Again, as a part of this appraoch he prefers to the colleged close to the home, in spite of his mother's insistence. In the meantime he has progressed a little foresaking Rebecca forever. Though he has been suspcious of his mother's relation with Schramm, it is his chance meeting with Schramm when the later remains busy in sneaking a smoke in the bushes, and learns the unromantic truth. On the very next day he gets an acceptance letter from the NYU. It is at this juncture, during the final visit to Perry, the doctor reveals to Justin his discovery that thumbsucking is not a medically debilitating problem. In the last part of Thumbsucker, it is shown that while in the flight to New York, he dreams of reaching his objective of becoming a TV anchor. After a light nap he wakes up only to find his thumb still stuck in his mouth. Noticing an attractive girl staring at him smilingly, though slightly embarassed he introduces himself smartly. In this scene lies the true essence of the film, Thumbsucker.
