Among the many rivers you will find here in Kobuk Valley National Park magnificent river bluffs towering as high as 150 feet composed of the Kobuk Valley sand. It has become the home of permafrost ice wedges that never melt. The frozen remains of many ice age mammals can still be found here in the river bluffs of Kobuk Valley NP.

While you are sitting back and admiring the gorgeous vistas that Kobuk has to offer you can spend your time fishing for Arctic char, grayling, pike, salmon, sheefish, whitefish, and all the other species of fish that call this area their home. Although there are no officially maintained hiking trails at Kobuk Valley NP, that does not mean that you are not going to be in for a real treat when it comes to backpacking through this gorgeous country. One of the most magnificent places to explore here are the sand dunes which cover an area of about 25 square miles. They are broken up into different areas: the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, the Little Kobuk Sand Dunes and the Hunt River Sand Dunes. Most of these dunes are to be found on the southern side of the Kobuk River, although there are also many to be found to the north. There are also many older, vegetation covered dunes that are littered throughout the southern portion of the valley.
If you are planning to take a backpacking trip into the wilds of Kobuk Valley NP, be ready and be prepared. There are no official trails here, so you will be on your own. This is also bear country, so you will have to be on the look out for the local wildlife. No backpacker wants to find themselves as the lunch for a wandering bear.
You'll want to make sure that you pack plenty of food and supplies, as there are no 7-11's or McDonald's to be found here in the park. Whatever you are going to have on hand to use for clothing, shelter or food is what you carry on your back. You'll also want to make sure that you bring a portable gas stove with you because cutting down trees is illegal here in Kobuk Valley.
