Orkut is an online community with is run by Goggle. The name comes from a worker of Goggle named Orkut Buyukkoten. This site was created to aid uses to meet new online friends, stay connected with friends they already have and can be a place to meet potential matches, in a romantic way.
The Orkut com site is akin to sites such as MySpace. It offers a lot of features, including one that MySpace does not have; which are forums that are easily created. Up until the year 2006, Orkut could only be joined by a person who received an invitation. However, in 2007, Orkut became a site in which any one can connect and this increased it popularity.
The site stated out in the year 2004. Because the site was by invitation only when it first launched, it was known to be very privileged and people would try to get invited. Within months of first launching, there were over one million members, three years later the member list grew to be over forty-nine million, in 2007.
One feature of the Orkut site is that an individual can list people in different ways, including who they feel are their best friends, good friends, acquaintances and people they do not know of yet. In addition, a member can then become a fan of any person they have listed as a friend. When this is done, they then judge the friend as being trustworthy, cool, or sexy. They use numbered rating system that goes from one to three.
With Orkut, any member can look at another member’s profile. Nothing remains secret or hidden. The only way to block this is to put a person on the Ignore List. A member may also choose particular profile settings, which will enable them to only show certain information to the public and save all of their information for friends.
Orkut is a great way of online matchmaking, as a person can decide to click on a selection that they have a crush on someone; meaning that they are attracted to them and like them. In turn, that person can then also give a crush signal back; when this takes place, both people will receive a message that they have a mutually crush. This can be a great way to make an online match.
As with any other online community, an individual should be cautious to not include exceptionally private information in their profile; such as full name, exact address or other details that could potential lead to identity theft or hacking.
