There was in the early 1970's a comic book called V for Vendetta. This was a comic about the government underbelly and all its corruptness and evil. The main character, V, who could be cast as a vigilante of some sort. He saves a young girl named Evey who goes on to tell him her life story and the nuclear war she lives through during the late 1980's. She also tells him of her father who is now a political prisoner because of the war.
The film is riddled with V references or the number 5. The title of the movie is V FOR VENDETTA which has five syllables. The title character uses three short notes and one long to signal people. This is translated from the Morse code as the letter V. The chapter titles in the comics and th book each begin with the letter V. Even Evey's name has some frame of reference here. The E is th fifth letter of the alphabet and the V is representing 5 from the Roman numeral system, and the Y is the twenty-fifth letter of the alphabet or more acutely, five squared. So throughout the work, V or the number 5 plays a big role in the story.
The Wachowski brothers who also did the MATRIX movies which Hugo Weaving had a part in took the helm of this film and handed it over to James McTeigue. McTeigue came up with a great thriller and a well choreographed movie that left some audiences that were fans of the comic book thrilled. Other fans were not as gracious. The special effects are said to be quite effective and seamless as well as amazing and awesome. McTeigue made the film without being elaborate, but stuck to his ideas he had for the movie.
Some people accuse him of ripping off MATRIX ideas for VENDETTA. But he protested that while the MATRIX was a fictional science fiction world, V FOR VENDETTA was based on real world ideas of today. That is what made the film so inviting to everyone. It was an up to date version of world events told under the guise of a vigilante trying to help a little girl. The most important idea of the film is the emotion of fear. It takes center stage. Some people are controlled by it and some gain strength from it. Whatever the emotion, fear is a controlling factor in the people's lives in this movie.
Most of the critics thought the movie would bomb as it didn't follow th comics as close as it should have. Of all the criticism VENDETTA received, most people were quite happy with the finished project. Some said it was dark and emotional, while other said it was cold and gritty. Almost everyone came away from the movie going “WOW, what an awesome flick.” They highly recommend V FOR VENDETTA to the masses. Most said it was about a fighter of freedom in a depressed world who makes an uncommon ally in a young woman. He sets out to restore society's virtues and their freedoms that were taken away by the government and its secret societies. It is also widely though that there are some references to the 9/11 incident throughout the film. There are also direct thoughts about our government and its war on terrorism. The simple idea is to think for yourself and not let the government or politicians run your life. V is simply a man with an idea and he doesn't give up just because he has been oppressed, he keeps trying to get his dignity back and living to fight another day when the world's leaders become too engrossed in themselves to think about all the other people that are also living in the world today.
