Do you ever get the feeling that you are being watched by someone? Imagine if that is true and not just true but you are being watched by the entire world live without any commercial breaks. It’s freaky to even think about it. The Truman Show is exactly about the same theme which is brilliantly executed by the director Peter Weir and splendidly played by Jim Carey. I think no other actor would have done justice to this role like Jim Carey did.
The movie is about a man whose life seems normal where he is married and living with his wife, has a nice job, drives a nice car and lives in a nice house. Showing Truman Burbank played by Jim Carey as a sweet, caring and charming man who says “Hi” to everyone he knows everyday. Truman has a smooth life going on until weird things start to happen that grows his suspicions, things that make him question everything in his life. An electric light falls of the sky from nowhere that startles Truman. Little things like same people crossing the road after a couple of minutes, people promoting products in usual conversation for no apparent reason, anyone coming Truman’s way to tell him something secret is escorted in a weird way.
The truth behind these weird scenarios is that Truman is not just some ordinary man living his life but he’s the main character of a TV Show he does not even know about. It’s a 24 hour/7 days a week show with no advertisements which explains the people advertising in their usual conversations. He has been on TV since he was in his mother’s womb. Every step he has taken, every move he has made, everything he has said have been heard by the entire world. Everyone around the globe knows Truman like they know themselves. Truman is make belief that he is living a normal life although he is not. Everything in his life is fake, a movie set with fake friends, fake wife, a fake job and a fake place he is living in. A completely different, perfect world set up for him to make this TV show popular.
The ending is the best part while a lot of people showed disappointment with it. But I think it was a mind blowing ending where Truman leaves the fake world set up for him into the real world saying good-bye to all of the viewers. It was moving and a heroic act from Truman. This was movie had more to it than just romance, comedy or suspense, what it feels to me is that the theme of the movie is taken from the famous poem of Shakespeare:
All the World’s a Stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
I truly liked this movie a lot as it was just right from directing to performing. It warns us and entertains at the same time about the extent of network power that could take over the world in a couple of years. An appealing, offbeat, one-hundred minute diversion for those who are tired of seeing super heroes saving the world, aliens taking over the planet and high school kids. A thumbs up for the team of “The Truman Show” I think they really nailed it.
