The Super Bowl of TennisTennis is one of the oldest sports out there. Not many people know much about it though. It can be played with two to four people, and can be really fun. You play up to four, but it is counted in a really funny way. You have to be serving to get a point, and the net is really low to the ground. There are all sorts of thing you can learn about tennis. Tennis was believed to be started by the Greeks. But then it was not called tennis, it was sphairistike. They say that the kings of tennis would be the nights at the round table, though because they have been know to be some of the first people to play it in written history. The game of tennis was patented in February 23, 1874 by a man by the name of Major Walter Wingfield. The game of tennis became the game we all know and love to day a few years later, when Major Walter Wingfield had a party and got everyone to play “lawn tennis”. And by 1881, it was a major hit and everyone had to play. That was when the first club of tennis opened up. And when a club of tennis opens up, there is bound to be competition among the members, and outside parties. But before we continue, you must know what tennis is all about.
Tennis is a game that is played with two teams. Each team can have up to two people. When only one person is on a team it is called singles, but when two are on a team it is called doubles. It is played on a court that is seventy-eight feet long and thirty-six feet wide when you play doubles, because the court is bigger with more people. When you play singles, the court is twenty-seven feet wide, but still has the same length as the doubles court. Down the middle of the court there is a net. The net is about three feet high in the center. The game of tennis is played to four, but it is not counted in a regular way. When both sides have zero, the score keeper counts it as love. When you score one, it is fifteen. When you score two, it is thirty. When you score three, it is forty-five. And when you score four it is the game point. Usually these games are played several times because they can go quite fast sometimes.
The game is started by one player on a team standing behind the serving line and hitting the tennis ball up and over their head. Only the serving team can score a point. The first serve must make it over the center line. Then, the opposing team must hit the ball back. There are two main ways to hit the ball. There is the forehand, which is hit using one hand, your right one and you step out as you hit it. The other type of hit is a backhand which is when you put both hands on the neck of the rackets and is hit from your left side. This is usually the most powerful swing. After the opposing team hits the ball back over to your side of the court and you hit it over to their side again, it does not have to go over the middle line.
Thus, The Championships, Wimbledon was born. Wimbledon, for short is the oldest major championship of tennis and is widely considered to be the most prestigious and important. It is held every year between June and July, and the tournaments are split up. There major sects are: Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles. But there are youth tournaments and there are also handicapped events.
