There's a Touch of Sadness in Milpitas, CA

Why are there so many unhappy faces in Milpitas, CA? Many of the city's young men are upset with a recent closing. The town voted to close the Milpitas Skate Park. Does that vote signal a general dislike for skate boarders among Californians? No, read below how a different California city has launched a project that's aimed at the creation of a newer and larger park.

There are a number of long faces in Milpitas, CA. There are a lot of bored young men in Milpitas, CA. There is a flat and empty hard surface in Milpitas, CA. The Milpitas Skate Park at the Great Mall, Milpitas, CA is now closed.

No more can the young skateboarders of Milpitas practice their jumps and turns at the Milpitas Skate Park. No more do mothers have to tend to injuries suffered at the Skate Board Park.  No more can the slapping of skate boards be heard by the shoppers at the Great Mall, Milpitas, CA. In fact the owners of the Mall's sports shop are a bit uneasy. Why are they uneasy? They're uneasy because they now expect to get fewer customers.

And the shop owners are not the only businessmen concerned about the closed Skate Park. For more than one owner of a hotel, Milpitas, CA seems now to have less potential for providing customers. Many California travelers had liked to let their sons loose at the Milpitas Skate Park while they had enjoyed some Mall shopping. The Park had given them more time for shopping, and more time to spend in Milpitas, CA. Of course a longer stay had also meant more money for the hotel where the travelers were staying.

Now when a family with a young son stays at a local hotel, Milpitas shop owners see very little of that family. The son does not want to go shopping, and there is no place where he can entertain himself.  Hence, that family soon moves on, and does not spend much time or money in Milpitas, CA.

Things look pretty bleak for the young men in Milpitas, CA. For young men in Culver City, CA, however, things are looking quite bright. Thanks to a decision by the City Council, construction has begun in Culver City on the much-debated new skate board park. In fact, on the night of February 13, 2006 one of the City Councilmen requested the posting of a sign at the future park site. He wanted all of the residents to see how their tax dollars were being used.

In late 2005 the City's skate boarders already had a small, temporary skate park, but they longed for something larger, something more permanent. In addition, some residents had found that the small skate park did not prevent skate boarders from annoying people on the streets. Therefore a trio of young, die-hard skate boarders had started attending the weekly Council meetings. More than once they had used their sneakers to carry them to the podium in Council Chambers, and there they had pleaded for a better skate park.

One of those skate boarders even accepted an offer for advice. When the Council needed to reach a decision on where to put a new skate park, one of the Councilmen turned to the young skateboarders. He wanted to know if they preferred a park on a then grassy area or up where a basketball court had been formerly.

The young skate boarder gave the Councilman an honest answer. He said, "After a long day of skate boarding, it would be nice to lie on the grass."  That young man should appreciate the respect given to his comments. No one seems to have asked for comments from the skate boarders in Milpitas, CA.
