There Are Certain Requirements To Becoming A Foster Parent.

Added: 05/15/2007

Becoming a foster parent is a big step. By becoming a foster parent you can change the course of someone's life. That is why there are certain requirements you must meet in order to get started. There are many things you must think about when considering the possibility of taking in foster children. These children have special needs and you will be required to meet them.

The foster care system is set up to help young people in need. These children can range in age for 0-18 years old. The reasons for a child being sent to a foster home can vary from child to child. In order for a child to be placed in a foster home there are a number of reasons that may exist. Either they are emotional, physically or sexually abused or their parents are physically, mentally or emotionally unable to care for them. A child may also be placed in a foster home because their parents have abandoned them or are suffering from problems with alcohol, drugs or other chemicals. In some cases these children are removed from their families as a result of their own emotional or behavioral problems, but they may also be placed in a foster home as a result of their parents separating, divorcing or even the death of their parents. These children all have special needs therefore it is very important that potential foster parents meet certain requirements in order to insure they are capable of meeting these needs.

If you are hoping to help these children through this rough part of their life you must meet certain requirements. First you must complete an application for family home licensing. After you have submitted your application you will have to undergo a background check, a criminal history check and each adult member of the household must be fingerprinted. You will also have to show that you can provide and have family stability. You will then receive a home inspection and personal interview from the licensing service. Your state’s Department of Children and Families generally perform this service. This department will also require character references and pre-service training prior to issuing your license or certification. It is also a requirement that you be over 21 years old in order to qualify.

These are not the only requirements that must be met. You must show you are of good physical and emotional health. Your home must meet certain requirements in safety including space and equipment needed to provide care for these children. You must also show that you have the skills, attitude and stamina to deal with the behaviors and feelings of these children. You must also show that you can demonstrate a certain level of acceptance toward the parents of these children and accept the temporary nature of the care you are providing these children. It is important that you will be able to help the child in their transition back to their family or their move on to a permanent or adoptive placement. Working cooperatively with the representatives of the foster agency is also very important.

Among the certain requirements mentioned above is a personal interview by the licensing facility. These interviewers will ask questions pertaining to your experience with raising children as well as your experience with the issues of child abuse and neglect. They will also want to know about your views about and approach to discipline and your awareness of the importance and measures that must be taken to provide a safe environment for children. These interviews are also designed to make sure you are aware of the potential impact becoming a foster parent can have on your family and it’s current style of life. To become a foster parent is very important decision that affects more people than just you. Even if you meet the certain requirements it is very important that both you and your family are ready to take on the responsibility and change that will come as a result.
