Good Friday is an important part of the Easter celebration in many communities.  Many Christian families in the United States in particular look forward to Good Friday and the celebrations that it brings.  Although the long Good Friday church service that takes place in the evening can be tiresome to children and to people who are not very devout, the long Good Friday service is one of the best services of the entire year in the eyes of many pious Christians.  Good Friday is a time when Christian people remember Jesus Christ and what he stood for, and many devout Christians find the practice of engaging in these kinds of thoughts to be very warming and helpful as they struggle to keep their faith in these troubled modern times.

The date of Good Friday is different every year, leading many people to be fairly unsure as to the answer to the question "When Is Good Friday?"  If you have ever found yourself asking the question of "when is Good Friday?" you are certainly not alone.  Good Friday can be confusing to keep track of because it is not a fixed numerical date.  It varies from year to year because the important thing about Good Friday is not the date itself that it happens to fall on, but it is the relationship between Good Friday and Easter Sunday that matters instead.

There are no Good Friday traditions that are quite as widely known or as widely practiced as the traditions associated with Easter Sunday itself.  Good Friday is much more of a low-key and pious occasion than Easter Sunday is.  Indeed, many of the traditions we associate with Easter Sunday are actually derived from pagan or celtic traditions rather than from anything that is explicitly mentioned or described in the old testament or in the new one.  Good Friday does not include any of these kinds of borrowed traditions, but is a purely Christian holiday.

Many Christian families celebrate Good Friday with a traditional holiday meal.  Often, the dinner that a family shares on Good Friday is one of the most elegant and festive meals of the year.  Good Friday is not an appropriate time for a party or for a large and raucous gathering with a lot of extended family.  Instead, Good Friday is traditionally a time when immediate family members gather together for a quiet celebration that features delicious food, a bit of good wine to complement the meal, and the kinds of precious conversations that only a very close family can have.

Good Friday dinner is a great chance to have some quality time with your family.  In today's hectic world, parents and children rarely have as much time together as they would like to have without the interruptions of friends, neighbors, telephone calls, or television shows.  Good Friday dinner is a chance to step back into a simpler time, when families had hours and hours to spend around the dining room table sharing stories from their week and taking the time to really listen to each other.  Good Friday is the kind of holiday when family memories are made that last a lifetime, so it is little wonder that so many people think fondly of the holiday of Good Friday.
